The Huawei P8 is not coming to the US

But, we are getting a variant of the device, this summer.

This morning, Huawei announced the P8. It’s a great looking smartphone, made of metal, and a fantastic 13MP camera on the back. While we were pretty excited about the device, the excitement quickly wore out, especially when we found out that the device was not coming to the US. However, according to Huawei they will be bringing a variant of the P8 Stateside sometime this summer. Now that could be a much cheaper version to go on sale on the prepaid carriers – which is really the only way Huawei devices have made it to the US. Or they could offer it with one of Qualcomm’s chips – that way we have proper LTE compatibility with AT&T and T-Mobile – and sell it unlocked. Similar to what they did with the Ascend Mate 2 last year.

Huawei has dropped the “Ascend” name this year for the P series and it’s just the Huawei P8. Makes it a bit easier to remember. The P8 features a 5.2-inch 1920×1080 resolution display, along with their own HiSilicon Kirin 930 octa-core processor – which does support Quick Charge – there’s also 3GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. And it’s powered by a 2680mAh battery inside. Additionally we have a 13MP camera on the back and a 8MP camera on the front. Huawei is really proud of their rear-facing camera, and did lots of comparisons on stage today in London, compared to the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the iPhone 6/6 Plus. According to Huawei, the P8’s camera does really well in low-light and also does well with OIS. With anti-shake degree as low as 1.2 degrees. Which is actually better than the iPhone 6 Plus (remember the iPhone 6 doesn’t have OIS, only the larger Plus model does). Additionally, their camera doesn’t stick out like the iPhone 6/6 Plus and the Samsung Galaxy S6. Which is a good thing for users that might be worried about damaging the camera.

So no P8 for the US, at least not yet. It appears to be heading to many countries in Europe and Asia but nothing for the Americas yet.
