Micromax Teases The Upcoming Launch Of Their Affordable Canvas Spark Smartphone

It wasn’t very long ago that market research and analysis firm Canalys came out with a set of numbers which claimed that Indian smartphone manufacturer Micromax had overtaken Samsung in terms of market share in the country. Samsung did contest the reports however, by quoting a different set of statistics from GfK. Since then however, a lot of water has flown under the bridge and the virtual invasion of Chinese brands in the country offering high-specced products at rock bottom prices, along with the reinvigoration of global heavyweights like Lenovo (with the Motorola purchase) and Asus investing more time, money and energy in their smartphone ventures, has meant that neither Micromax, nor Samsung are breathing easy, whatever be the technicalities of current market share.

With a view to holding onto that leadership position, Micromax is looking to take a ground-up approach and is apparently looking to launch ever more affordable handsets. Since last week, they’ve been teasing a new budget smartphone in its Canvas series of affordable handsets, called the Canvas Spark. Today, the company sent out invites for the launch event on Tuesday, April 21st. The teasers over the past week have already revealed a few important features of the device without revealing too much about the specs. The phone has been confirmed to be launching with Android Lollipop out of the box and Micromax also promises a ‘good’ camera and some sort of a toughened glass display – could be either Corning’s Gorilla Glass or Asahi’s Dragontrail. Rumor has it, that it will be priced at around Rs. 6,000 when launched, which is just a shade under $100. At that price, it will compete with Xiaomi’s Redmi 2, Motorola’s Moto E and Lenovo’s A6000 which are all in the same ballpark.

Micromax also revealed in a teaser that the Canvas Spark smartphone will be exclusively available through flash sale on Snapdeal, one of India’s leading online retailers alongside Flipkart and Amazon. We will have to wait for a few more days to find out the price and the specifications of the smartphone, which will play a large part in determining whether the device gains any traction among India’s smartphone buying population or not
