Earlier last month we started hearing about YouTube bringing the ability to view 360 degree videos to the service, giving users and content creators and way to view and make videos in a totally new perspective for something unlike ever before through YouTube. Things started off as a rumor and then were later confirmed, and as of today those 360 degree videos are now available through the service. What was likely unexpected is that YouTube has made the 360 degree videos viewable on Android devices too, and not just on the website, giving the possibility to view these videos virtually anywhere.
If you’re curious how these types of videos will look, we’ve placed the sample video below that YouTube created themselves so you can check it out and give you an idea of what to expect when more of the video uploads become available for viewing. Essentially, when users begin to watch a 360 degree video, they can see all the angles the video was being shot from by moving around the smartphone or tablet to face different directions as the video plays. Users will be able to spin the tablet or smartphone around in a circle to see just about everything, and they can look up and down as well, making it feel like actually being there.
On the web the viewing experience is basically the same, but since you can’t spin around your laptop or computer monitor, users can view all angles of the video by interacting with the on-screen D-Pad button that sits in the top left corner of the video player. It’s probably not as cool of an experience as watching through the Android app, as it sounds like this viewing experience seems more immersive. For content creators, uploading 360 degree videos requires that a compatible 360 degree camera is used, and YouTube mentions that Bublcam, Giroptic’s 360cam, IC Real Tech’s Allie, Kodak’s SP360, and the RICOH THETA are all compatible cameras that will work for creating and uploading these new types of video experiences to YouTube.
