Xiaomi’s Chief Executive Officer, Lei Jun, said that the company has no plans to release a smartphone costing just 399 Yuan. Any new Xiaomi smartphone would, therefore, cost more than 399 Yuan ($64). And today’s article is about just this: Xiaomi’s next budget smartphone device. Given that the model is built down to a price, it should be no surprise that the device has some lower level specifications and we’ve seen rumors of a 1.6 GHz, quad-core processor backed up by 1 GB of RAM. The screen is set to be a 4.7-inch, 720p display and there will be 8 GB of internal storage, which is almost certain to be expandable via a MicroSD card. These same rumors point towards an 8MP rear camera and a 2MP front camera, running over Android 4.4 KitKat.
We’ve now seen a Chinese Mobile executive leak information about a new, unannounced, Xiaomi device on social networking site Weibo. The new Xiaomi device is to be based around a Leadcore processor, model designation LC1860C, which is a quad-core, 32-bit, 28nm ARM Cortex-A7 clocked at up to 1.5 GHz. This chipset includes the Mali T628 MP2 GPU, which supports screen resolutions of up to 720p resolution. Whilst the Leadcore chipset is distinctly low end, it does support up to Category 4 LTE networking and digital cameras of up to 13MP with the ability to encode video of up to 1080p resolution at 30fps. The executive writes on Weibo that the picture above “has been kept in his album” for some time now. The new smartphone appears to have something of a conventional, plastic, build as there’s a lock or power key on the right hand side together with a volume rocker switch. The rear-facing camera has a LED flash.
Going back to the comments from Xiaomi’s Chief Executive Officer, Lei Jun, regarding pricing it does sound that the new device will cost more than 399 Yuan. We don’t know how much more it will be – will we be seeing a 450 Yuan device? Or is this is a bluff and we’ll be seeing a 399 Yuan device after all.
