Today, Root Metrics has released it’s report where they tell us which carrier does well in airports and which ones to avoid. This report consists of speed tests done in the top 50 busiest airports in the US according to the FAA. While Verizon did come out on top, T-Mobile grabbed the number two position not far behind Verizon. Surprisingly, T-Mobile turned out to be the most reliable. Root Metrics found them to be reliable at 47 airports out of the 50. They tested the ability to use different apps and such with a 97% or higher success rate. T-Mobile achieved that in 47 airports, with Verizon in 45. With AT&T at 38 and Sprint at 28. So the good news is that all four carriers scored higher than 50% in reliability.
Root Metrics also shows us the number of airports where the carriers scored 20mbps or higher on a speed test. Verizon was number one at 22, with AT&T next at 11. Followed by T-Mobile at 5 and Sprint in last place with just 1. For the total number of awards, Verizon came in first place at 31, followed by T-Mobile at 17, AT&T at 10 and Sprint at 1. These numbers include wins and ties, which is why they don’t equal 50.
The airport with the best performance was Memphis’ with AT&T leading the way. Followed up by Pittsburgh with Verizon winning there hands down and third was Chicago O’hare with Sprint winning over there. Interestingly Midway Airport in Chicago had Verizon as the strongest. Other notable airports include New York’s LaGuardia with Verizon in the lead, Phoenix with T-Mobile and Verizon tied at the top, and at the bottom was San Diego with T-Mobile winning there. San Diego has come in last place for the second year in a row. Verizon recorded the fastest median speed at Chicago’s Midway airport of 101.2mbps, wowza.
You can see the full report from Root Metrics website. It’s pretty interesting to see how the four carriers stacked up in the second half of the year compared to the first half. A lot changes in 6 months, as we can see. However, Verizon still reigns supreme. And with median speeds topping out at 101.2mbps, it’s not that surprising.
