Xiaomi to Face Stiff Competition from Chinese Gree

Xiaomi is currently the number one smartphone manufacturer in China, and third worldwide. This company was founded back in 2010, and their success is both surprising and interesting at the same time. Keep in mind that Xiaomi isn’t exactly an international company at the moment, they sell the vast majority of their devices in China. They also ship their handsets to some other parts of Asia, but that’s it. The company intends to start expanding this year, but it remains to be seen how successful will they be outside of their homeland.

That being said, it seems like Gree will try to compete with Xiaomi in China, at least in the mid-range segment of the market. According to the report from China, the president of Gree Energy, Dong Mingzhu, said that the company intends to release a rather interesting handset in China. Dong Mingzhu said that the phone will cost 1000 Yuan ($161) and that the company expects it to sell really well. The president of Gree Energy is considered to be one of the most successful entrepreneurs in China, next to Xiaomi’s co-founder Lei Jun, of course. We still don’t have any information regarding the specifications of this smartphone, but it seems like it will sport premium build and a rather sizeable screen. We’ll let you know when we get more details about the device itself.

It will certainly be interesting to see if Gree can compete with Xiaomi (and other big players in Asia), although that will be extremely hard to do. Xiaomi is a well-known brand at the moment, and it will be extremely difficult for Gree to compete with that. It seems like this company has a huge appetite for success and really does think that they can compete directly with the big guns in China. This handset is expected to land really soon, let’s see if Gree actually what it takes in order to succeed in China.
