Report: MediaTek’s Cortex-A72 Processor Due To Arrive In Q4 2015

MediaTek is slowly, but surely becoming a really important player in the mobile SoC market. This Taiwan-based company used to manufacture affordable mobile processors for low and mid-range handsets, and has really stepped up their game in the last year or so. MediaTek has manufactured really formidable processors in 2014, and has announced the MT6795 64-bit octa-core SoC earlier this year. This processor performed great in various benchmarks, and might be a direct competitor to the far more popular Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 processor.

That being said, MediaTek’s roadmap leaked recently, and revealed the line of processors the company is planning to release this year. According to the leaked information, MediaTek will release the 20nm MT6796 processor by the end of 2015, and now we have some additional information to share regarding MediaTek’s plans. According to the newest report, MediaTek will manufacture a Cortex-A72 based chip later this year, which is going to be available at the end of this year. This will be a 64-bit chip which will use big.LITTLE technology and combine four Cortex-A72 cores and four Cortex-A53 cores. The information says that this chip will belong in the MT679X series, so this might be either the aforementioned MT6796 SoC, or the company might produce something with a higher last digit and release it later in the year. This chip will come in 20 and 16nm flavor it seems, and will offer support for 4G LTE of course. What’s interesting here, is that the network modem will be included on the SoC itself, something that is becoming kind of a standard lately.

MediaTek is growing, it will be interesting to see how will they fare this year. In addition to all this, a recent rumor said that MediaTek might be getting ready to use AMD GPUs in the future and ditch the Mali ones. We still don’t know how much truth is in this rumor, but it sure sounds interesting, we’ll hopefully get more information regarding that soon, presuming it’s legit of course. Either way, MediaTek is becoming quite a powerful SoC manufacturer, let’s see if they can go head-to-head with Qualcomm.
