The last year has seen a significant rise in the availability and awareness of virtual reality. Companies like LG have made their intentions for virtual reality clear, while HTC at MWC unveiled their latest option in the way of the HTC Vive. That said, one of the companies who was quick out of the gates with virtual reality, was Samsung. It has been known for a long time that the South Korean tech giant was interested in virtual reality and the buildup to the release of the Gear VR unit was widely publicised. A lot of the attention did come from issues that the device was encountering, however, a lot of the news was also about how Samsung were investing and embracing the new technology.
As such, when the Gear VR was announced, it was not too much of a surprise. Since then, it has also not been that much of a surprise that Samsung has been placing great focus on the video abilities of their Gear VR and especially as they are also in the process of launching their own Milk VR video service. However, what is a little surprising is the ways in which Samsung see the Gear VR can be used. A prime example of this came today when Samsung released an interesting new six-minute video highlighting a less thought of use of virtual reality.
In short, the video highlights how an Australian man was able to witness the birth of his child using the Gear VR. Due to being a worker who works away from home, the father-to-be was located 4000 miles away from his wife and Samsung decided to help the two with their situation, by providing what Samsung refer to as the “world’s first live virtual reality birth using the Samsung Gear VR”. The VR unit allowed the father-to-be to not only see what was going on, but to also experience the birth at a much more interactive level, by offering a full 360-degree room view of what was going. In short, allowing the father to feel like he was in the room, in spite of being on the other side of the country. You can see how the event all unfolded through the video below.
