GSMA Winners for 2015 Include Asphalt 8, LG’s G3 and Samsung KNOX

Every year during Mobile World Congress, the GSMA (the GSM Association) release their awards for the year, spanning all sorts of categories. Everything is mobile related of course, and this year the categories cover everything from hardware, to apps and games. The winners for 2015 are an interesting bunch, and while the big names do make an appearance in this list, it’s not necessarily for the reasons you’d immediately expect. You can take a look at the full list of category winners at the source link below, but I’m going to pick out some highlights, so come join me.

Starting with hardware, LG and Motorola are the big Android winners, with LG’s G3 tying with Apple’s iPhone 6 for winner of the ‘Best Smartphone’ category. Elsewhere, Motorola bags both the ‘Best Low Cost Smartphone’ (that’s those under $100) award with the Moto E and ‘Best Wearable Mobile Technology’ for the Moto 360. Interestingly, Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 wins ‘Best Mobile Tablet’ for 2015.

Where apps are concerned, Gameloft’s ‘Asphalt 8: Airborne’ takes ‘Best Mobile Game App’, with News Republic taking the ‘Best Media Mobile Media & Publishing App’. The overall best app of the year however, as chose by the judges was IFTTT, an app that continues to get better with each update.

There’s a lot of interesting categories in the awards for 2015, but one that caught our eye was the ‘Best Mobile Enabled Consumer Electronics Device’ which ZTE won for their Smart Projector, perhaps Lenovo’s Pocket Projector can be next year’s winner? Elsewhere, Samsung managed to at least take one award, and no it wasn’t for the Galaxy S5, but rather for ‘Best Security/Anti-Fraud Product or Solution’ for Samsung KNOX, something that they’ve bolstered further in the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge with even more partnerships.
