Samsung S Dual Edge Might Not Have Additional Functionality

The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge is the first handset to feature a curved glass edge on the side of the device designed to provide customers with additional software buttons. This edge can be used to control the camera, music, provide information tickers, application shortcuts or simply as a picture. Samsung combined a nifty design feature backed up by functionality and it’s been widely rumored that there will be at least a variant of the Samsung Galaxy S6 with curved side glass, likely two edges rather than just one. There may be two variants of the S6, one with curved edges and one without. According to “industry sources” as cited by Korean media, it is now believed that the model with the curved glass will be called the Galaxy S Dual Edge.

Android Headlines have already reported on the rumor that the S6 Edge model will have a lesser sloping and extending edge compared with the Note Edge. There are likely two reasons for this: the first is ergonomic purposes; in other words, to make the S6 easier to handle. The second is that it’s time-consuming and complicated, so therefore expensive, to manufacture curved glass and if the curve is reduced, this makes it less expensive. Samsung Mobile are under intense pressure to produce a winning handset to the market and part of this is to make the model competitive. A leaked, low resolution picture showing at the bottom of this article seems to show that yes, those curved side glasses are somewhat muted compared with the Note Edge but they also won’t be as useful. The rationale behind this is because there’s less space for customers to use the edges.

If Samsung produce a Galaxy S6 Dual Edge with no additional functionality compared with the stock S6, but a higher price, perhaps it will be more comfortable to hold? Samsung could be using the S Dual Edge as a demonstration that they are able to produce beautiful looking and handling handsets. However, this could be an expensive exercise if the model has no additional functionality compared with a stock S6 (complete with what is believed to be a metal frame) but a higher price.
