Now that the Gear VR, Samsung’s virtual reality headset for its line of Galaxy based smartphones, is out in the open and will be offered at a varied selection of retailers, most people are probably already aware that Samsung worked the company Oculus to manufacture the Virtual Reality tech inside of the headset. As part of that deal Samsung would reportedly provide the screen tech for Oculus. It appears that Samsung and Oculus already have more plans to work with each other in the future for other products. The plan is to release more virtual reality products like Gear VR although no mentions were made as to exactly what they had in mind or if they have anything else in the works at this time.
We imagine for those that have already tried the Gear VR and use a compatible device, this is probably exciting news to learn, heck, even I can get behind the idea a little bit and I don’t personally own a device that’s compatible with the Gear VR. What’s to say that future devices between these two companies won’t have a more open approach though? And that’s a thought to be a little excited about if you currently run an incompatible device to the Gear VR headset. Even though we don’t know what Oculus and Samsung will work together to produce next, Oculus CEO did mention that they would continue to work closely with Samsung for future products, which they feel will be successful after they successfully launched the Gear VR this year.
The Samsung Gear VR was announced at IFA 2014 in Berlin, where Samsung also announced the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge devices. For some the phones were the stars of the show, but the Gear VR was easily the standout device as there really isn’t a whole lot of VR based product like Oculus Rift or Gear VR out there. Although not really the same experience as you’ll be able to have with the Gear VR, Google’s Cardboard device is an inexpensive model that displays just what you can do with virtual reality. If you have never given Cardboard a try, it will at least give you a good idea with what Gear VR is capable of.
