The Meizu MX4 Family Is Complete But Expect Two More Meizu Handsets This Year

Two months ago the Meizu MX4 launched to much fanfare. Shortly before the MX4 dropped, Meizu went on record saying that they would have four device launches this year. We’ve seen two – the MX4 and MX4 Pro, which gives us two left in the next six weeks, right? Perhaps. It’s possible that Meizu meant by the end of the Chinese year, which is in February, but that still means another two handsets to be revealed in the next three months. We are now seeing reports that the next two Meizu ‘phones will not belong to the MX4 family, as we had originally believed.

To detail the MX4, this is a very capable device based around a 5.4-inch, 1080p screen. Under the hood, the MX4 runs a MediaTek octa core processor backed up by 2 GB of RAM and a choice of 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB internal storage. This processor consists of two quad core units arranged using the big.LITTLE methodology; a high performance, 2.2 GHz ARM Cortex-A17 unit combined with a high efficiency, 1.7 GHz quad core processor for superior battery efficiency. The idea behind this arrangement is that when the device is not working hard, it uses the low power consumption cores to get maximum battery life. In contrast, when the operating system or applications require more power, the device switches across to the high powered processor cores in order to complete the given task in a shorter space of time. In practice, it means the MX4 has solid battery life and industry-leading performance. In addition to the processor and screen, the MX4 also comes with a 20.7 MP Sony Exmor RS rear camera and a 5 MP front facing camera. The MX4 runs Android 4.4 (KitKat) under Meizu’s Flyme 4.0 OS and has a 3,100 mAh rechargeable battery. I will write a little about the MX4 Pro, which is a bigger, even more powerful handset. It uses a 5.5-inch, 2,560 by 1,536 pixel screen, uses a Samsung Exynos big.LITTLE processor, 3 GB of memory but is otherwise similar to the MX4, except it packs a 3,350 mAh battery.

We had suspected that Meizu was working on smaller and larger cousins to the MX4, something like the MX4 Mini and the MX4 Note. However, Vice President Li Nan said recently on Chinese social network Weibo the MX4 was already perfectly designed, there was no need for a smaller device and the next devices won’t belong to the same family. It remains to be seen what Meizu are working on, but about a year ago we saw rumors of a “Blue Charms” range of devices, which may surface. These handsets appear to be designed to compete with the Xiaomi Redmi range of mid-range (or so) devices and be priced accordingly. It might make sense for Meizu to offer an inexpensive competitor to Xiaomi, depending on how the handsets were differentiated from the MX4 line up. Meizu is very secretive about their products and we have unconfirmed reports that the new handsets will be powered by MediaTek and have screens of around the 5.0-inch size. Both of these would appear to be safe bets! Until we have something more concrete, we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more information.
