Panasonic DMC-CM1 Coming To The UK In December

DMC-CM1_Spec_WOC_20140915

The Panasonic DMC-CM1 was not going to arrive in the United Kingdom according to the first press releases, but we now have reports that it’ll be sold in a limited number of British stores over the coming weeks. Panasonic cite high demand as the reason why the camera will move to Great Britain, starting next week on the 1 December. If you’re unfamiliar with the DMC, or Lumix CM1, this is billed as a camera with smartphone technology, rather than a smartphone with camera technology. The device uses the same sensor as is found in the Lumix DMC-FZ1000 camera, which is a 1.0-inch unit of 20 MP resolution. It has a Leica 10.2 f/2.8 lens with full manual exposure, ISO, shutter speed and white balance control, plus it allows the operator to save images as either JPEG or RAW format. The CM1 may also record video in full 4K resolution.

On the Android side of things, the CM-1 is based around a quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with 2 GB of RAM, a 4.7-inch 1080p resolution display, 16 GB of internal storage plus a MicroSD slot that supports up to 128 GB cards. It runs Android 4.4 Kit Kat – no word on when 5.0 Lollipop will be released – and is powered by a 2,600 mAh battery. The device has the expected radios for an Android device including 4G LTE. This makes it a middling to high end device; the only part of the specification sheet that would concern me slightly is the battery, because photography is power consuming.

At this time, the UK price is unconfirmed by Panasonic but one of the camera stores expects the price to be around £900: it’ll be available through Panasonic Online and seven stores across the UK from Edinburgh to Plymouth. We are also to understand that customers will be asked to complete a questionnaire before buying the camera and as supply is restricted, it’s going to be sold on a “first come, first served” basis. And I must write that I like the idea of a great quality camera with a smartphone tagged on, rather than the other way around but I’m yet to use one that I’d feel comfortable with day to day. The Nokia 1020 was close except it ran Windows Phone and battery life was an issue. Of course, the Panasonic is around twice the price of the Nokia 1020 so it ought to be good.
