Retro games have an undeniable charm in that they all seem to deliver a sense of nostalgia even if we’ve never played that title before. Blocky, old school graphics and simple game play rule the day but the lack of high quality graphics only forced us to use our imaginations more. Whatever the reason, retro games is a game genre that is here to stay. Here are the best Android retro games.
10000000

First up is an application called 10000000 (ten million). It’s a retro-style dungeon crawling RPG with a puzzle element reminiscent of Bejeweled. The idea is simple. You must rebuild your castle. In order to gain resources, you must go on “a run” where you battle bad guys and earn resources. The battle system requires you to mix and match icons in a puzzle system. It’s surprisingly fun and inexpensive. There are also no in app purchases.
Another World
[Price: $1.99]
Another World is a great retro game because it’s actually a retro game. It was first on consoles in the early 1990’s under the name Out Of This World. In this game you play as a physicist who is warped to another world (get it?) and must find his way back. It’s a little creepy but in a good way. You’ll fight bad guys, run from dangerous animals, and solve puzzles to make it through. It’s a fun play and a good game even 20 years later.
Buff Knight – RPG Runner

Buff Knight may seem like just another endless runner but it currently rocks an impressive 4.7 rating in the Google Play Store. The mechanics are simple and the story is pleasantly familiar. You are a knight of the kingdom of Buff and you must defeat the evil red dragon and save the princess. Given that it’s an endless runner, you wouldn’t expect that much depth but there really is quite a bit. Plus, it’s only $2US and that’s really not that much.
Dragon Fantasy 8-bit RPG
[Price: $7.99]
Dragon Fantasy is what it says it is. It’s an 8-bit RPG that’s much in the same style as games like Mystic Quest on the Super Nintendo. Along with charming graphics, you’ll have the classic dungeon crawling RPG experience along with a full story line that’s told over the course of three chapters. It’s a tad pricey at $7.99 but most people who have bought it haven’t regretted it. If you were into old school jRPGs, this is a great title to check out.
Emulators

Of course, one of the best ways to enjoy old-style games is to actually play old games. There are a host of emulators on Android including Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS, N64, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, PlayStation 1, and others. Final Fantasy (all of them), Chrono Trigger, and Dragon Quest (all of them)

Squaresoft and Enix were arguably two of the heaviest hitters in the 1990’s with epic jRPGs like Chrono Trigger, the Final Fantasy series, and the Dragon Quest series. Now, they’ve combined to make Square Enix and they have been very aggressive in re-releasing their classic 1990’s jRPGs on Android. You can get Final Fantasy 1, 2, 3, 4, 4 After Years, 5, and 6 as well as Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest 1 and 2 (likely with more to come). They cost varying amounts but it can get pretty expensive. Fans of these games will no doubt be okay with dropping that sort of cash for the nostalgia alone. Game Dev Story

This retro-style simulation game puts you in the driver’s seat as you create your own video games. You have to come out with blockbuster hits to keep your game studio going and you’ll be dealing with a number of professions like sound engineer and game developers. Some people have complained that the game is a little short but generally speaking, a large majority of people who have bought this game have enjoyed it. If you like simulation games and retro graphics, this is what you want.
Hoplite

Hoplite is a strategic, turn-based strategy game where you must move around a honeycomb-style map and defeat opponents. As you play, you can upgrade your abilities and deal more damage. You’ll also have to deal with obstacles like lava pits and each level is randomly generated. There is Google Play Games services included if you’re into that. It’s free to play with in app purchases and you can pay $1.99 to unlock the full app that includes achievements among other things.
Knights of Pen and Paper +1
[Price: $4.99 with in app purchases]
Knights of Pen and Paper is an interesting RPG concept. You play the game around a table with a dungeon master and players as though you were playing a real game of dungeons and dragons. In the background is the actual RPG playing out as you make decisions. You can create characters and play through the story. It’s $4.99 with in app purchases which may sway some people against using it but most people who play it seem to like it a lot. The +1 version has extended game play and more features. You can even play as the dungeon master!
Legends of Yore
[Price: Free with in app purchases ($2.02)]
Legends of Yore is a dungeon crawler where you must move around, explore, and kill bad guys. As you kill bad guys, you level up and earn more gold and new equipment. Pretty standard dungeon crawling stuff. You can get a demo of the game that caps at level 20 and then unlock the rest via in app purchases or you can just get the paid version for $2.02US. There are also some small things that are fun like MOGA controller support if you use one of those.
Minecraft – Pocket Edition

The essential retro gaming experience is Minecraft. It was recently purchased by Microsoft but so far no one has had any complaints. It’s the classic Minecraft experience except on a mobile device. You can build things, dig things, kill things, and the sky is the limit as to what you can do. It’s one of the most popular games ever on Android and people still love to play it. Whether or not rymdkapsel’s graphics lend itself to being a retro style game is up for debate, but there is no doubt that it looks old school. In this minimalist strategy game, you build a base and fend off wave after wave of bad guys. It takes away all of the graphical confusion that you see in other strategy games and just lets you get to the point. Some people have complained about the game’s length but most people still seem to enjoy it. It’s $3.99 with no in app purchases.
Pixel Defenders Puzzle
[Price: $1.99]
Pixel Defenders Puzzle is a mix between a tactical RPG and a puzzle game. It uses a semi-Bejeweled style where you match pixels to create defenders and then match defenders to create stronger defenders. You then use those defenders to fend off bad guys. There are achievements, leader boards, and an endless mode for those days where you just don’t want to stop. It’s a unique mesh of several game play styles and there are no in app purchases. It says there are in app purchases but the developers promise that this is not the case.
Sonic the Hedgehog (all of them)

The venerable Sonic the Hedgehog is on Android. you can currently get the first and second titles as you saw them on the Sega Genesis. They have been updated with cleaner graphics, achievements, and third party controller support. It’s an essential title for retro and old school game lovers out there and they’re relatively inexpensive. Superbrothers Sword & Sworcery

Superbrothers Sword & Sworcery is an action adventure game with some unique game play features. It prides itself on being an audio-visual experience so a lot of the soundtrack and sound effects are crafted around the game play. It features old school graphics that look surprisingly good. Despite being old school, the developers have done quite a bit with it and there are points where you don’t imagine yourself playing such a pixelated game. It’s $4.99 if you want to give it a shot.
Terraria
[Price: $4.99 with in app purchases]
Terraria is sort of like a 2D Minecraft. There are a lot of the same kinda of concepts like digging for minerals and crafting items. There is a higher focus on killing bad guys and boss fights. Really, if you liked Minecraft, you’ll probably still like Minecraft more than this. However, this is a smaller game and an easier game to play on mobile and that’s where it gets its charm. It’s not overly expensive and it’s pretty enjoyable.
