First up is an application called 10000000 (ten million). It’s a retro-style dungeon crawling RPG with a puzzle element reminiscent of Bejeweled. The idea is simple. You must rebuild your castle. In order to gain resources, you must go on “a run” where you battle bad guys and earn resources. The battle system requires you to mix and match icons in a puzzle system. It’s surprisingly fun and inexpensive. There are also no in app purchases.

Another World is a great retro game because it’s actually a retro game. It was first on consoles in the early 1990’s under the name Out Of This World. In this game you play as a physicist who is warped to another world (get it?) and must find his way back. It’s a little creepy but in a good way. You’ll fight bad guys, run from dangerous animals, and solve puzzles to make it through. It’s a fun play and a good game even 20 years later.

Buff Knight may seem like just another endless runner but it currently rocks an impressive 4.7 rating in the Google Play Store. The mechanics are simple and the story is pleasantly familiar. You are a knight of the kingdom of Buff and you must defeat the evil red dragon and save the princess. Given that it’s an endless runner, you wouldn’t expect that much depth but there really is quite a bit. Plus, it’s only $2US and that’s really not that much.

Dragon Fantasy is what it says it is. It’s an 8-bit RPG that’s much in the same style as games like Mystic Quest on the Super Nintendo. Along with charming graphics, you’ll have the classic dungeon crawling RPG experience along with a full story line that’s told over the course of three chapters. It’s a tad pricey at $7.99 but most people who have bought it haven’t regretted it. If you were into old school jRPGs, this is a great title to check out.

Fans of these games will no doubt be okay with dropping that sort of cash for the nostalgia alone. If you like simulation games and retro graphics, this is what you want.

Knights of Pen and Paper is an interesting RPG concept. You play the game around a table with a dungeon master and players as though you were playing a real game of dungeons and dragons. It’s $4.99 with in app purchases which may sway some people against using it but most people who play it seem to like it a lot. The +1 version has extended game play and more features. You can even play as the dungeon master!

Legends of Yore is a dungeon crawler where you must move around, explore, and kill bad guys. As you kill bad guys, you level up and earn more gold and new equipment. Pretty standard dungeon crawling stuff. You can get a demo of the game that caps at level 20 and then unlock the rest via in app purchases or you can just get the paid version for $2.02US. There are also some small things that are fun like MOGA controller support if you use one of those.

Terraria is sort of like a 2D Minecraft. There are a lot of the same kinda of concepts like digging for minerals and crafting items. There is a higher focus on killing bad guys and boss fights. Really, if you liked Minecraft, you’ll probably still like Minecraft more than this. However, this is a smaller game and an easier game to play on mobile and that’s where it gets its charm. It’s not overly expensive and it’s pretty enjoyable.
