Most Rooted Phones Can Now Enable The Cast Screen Feature For Chromecast

Finally. Those were the words that came out of my mouth and probably many others when the news of the cast screen feature hit the chromecast app update this week. It has been a long time coming, all those sleepless nights waiting, wishing, wanting. Now it’s finally here and those of who just wanted to cast a game of Dead Trigger 2 can do so. Almost all of us at least. The unfortunate thing is that the cast screen feature is only currently compatible with a handful of phones. So what about the people that have older handsets from around a year ago or two years ago that are non-Nexus? The Chromecast app itself is compatible with virtually any smartphone that is on ICS or above, but the new feature is limiting.

For everyone else that is using a slightly older handset that isn’t yet supported by the cast screen feature, there’s hope. Where there’s a will there’s a way, and the way was discovered by a lovely member of the XDA community. The potential downside here is that the method requires your device to have root access, so we know that’s still leaving out a good number of people. However, the sheer fact that community member and developer r3pwn was able to get this method of enabling the cast feature working also opened up the doors for a lot of people as well.

With that said, the hard part is done. If you don’t have root, it’s time to look deep inside yourself and ask if this feature should be the sole reason you root your device. If not, then you’re better off waiting. For everyone that’s already rooted, the process is actually rather simple. We like simple sometimes right? The other thing to mention is that this method is listed as experimental so there’s a possibility that you might see some inconsistency. There is already a decent list of devices that have been tested and are marked as working though, with only a couple that are getting mixed reviews. The Galaxy S3 and Note 2 are somewhat inconsistent, while phones like the Moto X and Moto G, the HTC M8, the Oppo Find 7 and Find 7a, and others are all working properly it seems. Galaxy Nexus and older devices are marked as not working. If you’re ready to get things started, head to the XDA thread and download the apk file from the link posted, and once installed make sure to enable the mirroring feature and that’s all there is to it. See, simple can be good.
