Floatify App Brings Android L Floating Notifications To Your Device, No Root Required

floatify

We really like the look of the new Android L floating notifications. If you’re on a non-Nexus device, you’re stuck waiting until the fall before you’ll be able to get them, though. Even if you are on a Nexus device and can try out Android L, it’s still a preview build. It’s not quite ready to be a daily driver. If you want the floating notifications now, you can thanks to a new app called Floatify that popped up on XDA and is now available for free on the Google Play Store.

Floatify is pretty straight up. It gives you the new Material Design notification style found in Android L. If you haven’t seen this yet, it puts your notifications on top of everything else on your screen, giving you the ability to view alerts and then decide if you want to commit your attention to them or wait until later. The notification pane allows you to interact with it, too. There are built in swipe gestures to get rid of the notification, expand it, or open the app it is coming from.

Floatify lets you expand on these customizations a bit. The app will let you decide where you want the notification to appear. You can set it at the top of your screen, along the bottom, or right in the middle if that’s what you want. I like mine on top, which is the default setting, but it’s nice to have options. You can also whitelist apps that you want to always see, or blacklist the ones that you don’t ever want to get notifications from. This is a much needed feature, so we’re glad to see Floatify include it. You can even set the level of transparency of the notifications that pop up, keeping them more in the background or making them solid so they are more in your face, if you want. Some of these additional features are only available via in-app purchase, but you should still give it a whirl.
