After a ton of Xiaomi rumors over the last couple of days, we started to wonder where is Meizu. Well, the company was rather quiet lately, but some new information popped up in China which are worth sharing. Last year, Meizu promised that they’ll launch 4 handsets in 2014, the year is over and they launched only 3. Well, it is quite possible, even probable, that they meant until the end of Chinese year, which is at the end of January, so there’s still time. After the Meizu M1 Note launched, Meizu’s founder and CEO, Jack Wong, said that a smaller Meizu handset will launch in January. He basically confirmed that we’ll see a smaller version of the M1 Note handset which was rumored for a long time.
The image shown below this article is actually a teaser which showed up on Weibo (Chinese social network). If you take a closer look at the image, you’ll see two numbers in it, 2 and 7. Everyone thinks this teaser suggest that the device will launch on January 27, which makes sense I guess. Keep in mind that this teaser appeared on Ubuntu China Weibo page, so this could mean we’ll finally see the Ubuntu Touch-powered Meizu handset which was rumored to launch this month. Meizu and Canonical signed an agreement a while back and this handset was announced, but we weren’t given any specific information about the handset nor its launch date. This handset, which will allegedly launch this month, could end up being the smaller version of the M1 Note or the Ubuntu Touch-powered handset. The latest rumors are saying that this handset will be called the M1 Mini (running Flyme), feature a 5-inch display and that it will be powered by MediaTek’s 64-bit chip, while it will also sport a unibody design according to the rumors.
This actually sounds really interesting. What are your thoughts here? What do you think Meizu will launch at the end of this month, the Flyme-powered handset or the first Ubuntu Touch-powered Meizu smartphone? Let us know what you think, we’d love to hear from you, as usual.

It is almost impossible these days to get through a tech news day without hearing Xiaomi mentioned. The company is still unknown to a lot of users and yet have seen an almost meteoric rise to fame. It sounds strange that a company can be so well known while also being unknown and yet Xiaomi are exactly that, in terms of the average user. That is the average international user. In China, however, they are known. Very well known in fact. So much so that they are the number one smartphone manufacturer in China which is one of the reasons their global ranking has increased so much in spite of their products not being so widely known or available in other markets.
With such dominance in China, you would expect a number of cloned devices to be on sale. China generally seems to be a clone central for all things electronic and as such, the idea of cloned Xiaomi devices seems like a given. That said, it seems the cloning of Xiaomi is so widespread that it is actually been taken to the next level. Not only are devices being cloned, but entire stores are being cloned. In fact, it seems the cloning of entire Xiaomi stores is such an issue that Xiaomi CEO, Lei Jun has publicly warned people to the extent of the fake stores and advising not to buy from them.
According to the reports, these imitation stores are complete with Xiaomi signage, Xiaomi uniformed staff and to all purposes, seem like the real deal. They have been noted in many cities including Huaqiang, Shenzhen, Houjie, Dongguan (to name only a few). What’s more, if you are based in China and are wondering if your local Xiaomi store is a fake then the short answer is yes. Jun on his Weibo account, has publicly declared that they actually have no physical stores themselves and instead rely on their online stores for sales. As such, potential buyers are being heavily warned that any device picked up from any of these imitation stores are almost certainly going to be fake devices. So, you might want to make sure the next Xiaomi device you buy from, is from an online store and one directly affiliated with Xiaomi.

Ever since Xiaomi’s CEO announced that the company will release their new flagship handset on January 15, everyone immediately assumed that we’ll see the Mi4S or the Mi5 launched. This is to be expected, considering that is the only Xiaomi flagship line at the moment. I still believe Xiaomi will launch this handset on January 15 and I doubt that Lei Jun would refer to anything else as the “flagship”, but there were some leaks recently which teased the Snapdragon 615-powered Xiaomi-made handset. We already mentioned that the Redmi Note 2 will probably be released soon as well, and this handset could be powered by this chip. Well, the unannounced Redmi Note 2 just got listed on Oppomart, though it is listed as “out of stock” at the moment, of course.
According to Oppomart’s listing, this handset will feature a 5.7-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) 2D glass screen along with 2GB of RAM and 16 or 32GB of internal storage (depending which version you opt for). The device will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 615 (MSM8939) 64-bit octa-core processor which ships with an Adreno 405 GPU for graphics processing. 13-megapixel camera will be located at the back of this handset according to the listing, and a 5-megapixel snapper will be available up front. 3600mAh battery is also listed here as well as Android 4.4 KitKat OS and, of course, Xiaomi’s MIUI 6 skin which will be located on top of it. The listing also says that the device will be available in multiple color options and that this will be a dual-SIM capable handset (2x microSIM). The handset will measure 141.89 x 71.4 x 6.1mm and its weight isn’t available at the moment.
That being said, this handset looks almost identical to the Xiaomi Mi4. It looks so similar, that it could actually be a slightly photoshopped version of the Mi4, which would also mean it’s fake. I don’t know what to think of this to be honest, these specs look rather solid and considering this is supposed to be a really affordable mid-range handset, I believe it would sell well. I’m not sure this is legit though, I’ll leave that up to you, the listing could be real, but the image which is used to represent the device seems fishy to me. Let us know what you think.

We’ve been seeing a ton of rumors regarding Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship handset. This is not that surprising considering that Lei Jun, company’s CEO, announced that the company will launch their new flagship device on January 15. We’ve seen all kind of rumors and leaks in the last couple of weeks and especially the last couple of days. The alleged Xiaomi Mi4S and Mi5 leaked, multiple times, and we still don’t know which leak is real nor what will the name of the device be.
To add some more content to the table, we have a new leak to share with you today. The Mi5 chassis already leaked yesterday, and that happened again now. This chassis resembles the one that leaked yesterday, and if this leak pans out in the end, the Mi4S / Mi5 might resemble the Mi4 a whole lot. This is made out of aluminum and looks very similar to the Mi4’s chassis, but bigger, which was to be expected. This chassis also resembles the recently leaked Mi4S 3D schematics, so there seems to be some connection there, but as I said, we’ve seen so many leaks lately that it’s hard to say what’s real and what’s not.
The Xiaomi Mi4S / Mi5 is expected to launch on January 15, and according to leaks it will sport a 5.5-6″ 1080p or QuadHD display, 3 or 4GB of RAM and it will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 805 or 810 SoC, depending on which leak do you believe, of course. 16 and 8-megapixel cameras have also been mentioned, as well as an IR blaster which will reportedly be located at the top of this device.
This device is expected to launch in about 5 days, on January 15 in China. Xiaomi certainly wants to leave their mark this year and approve upon last year, which was amazing for the company as it is. Let’s see if Xiaomi can amaze us with what they announce, although I believe that some of these leaks went a bit too far and raised the hype more than necessary. What do you think, what will this device look like and what internal do you expect Xiaomi to include in the package?
