Wireless charging works using magnetic induction; the charger plate and the device both contain a coil. The charging plate cycles a magnetic field, which causes the coil in the device to resonate and this in turn may be converted into energy to recharge the battery. There are two main standards these days with Google supporting the Qi standard, first used in the Google Nexus 4 and subsequently rolled out to the Nexus 5, 6 and 2013 Nexus 7 models. A number of Nokia Windows Phone devices plus the Motorola Moto 360 Android Wear smartwatch also include Qi wireless charging as standard. The main advantage of wireless charging is that there are no fussy cables to attach and detach from the device, which is perfect for those of us with less than perfect hand / eye coordination or who maybe wish to recharge our devices without switching the light on and disturbing loved ones.
Today’s news is great if you have a Qi-enabled device: IKEA have announced the introduction of furniture incorporating Qi wireless charger mats as part of a new “Home Smart” plan. The items will be available in the United Kingdom, Europe and North America next month. IKEA will be selling a range of floor and table lamps, plus work lamps with integrated charging pads. There will also be a Nordmärke wireless charging pad with three ports designed for offices or perhaps homes, but looks perfect for homes with large numbers of wirelessly chargeable devices. IKEA’s new Home Smart furniture will also include USB ports to allow you to plug other devices in, too. Best of all, rather than having to plug individual wireless chargers in, these lamps will have the one power lead going into the furniture. IKEA is also marketing a new wireless charger that may be incorporated into existing IKEA furniture, called the Jyseen.
Jeanette Skjelmose, Business Area Manager Lighting and Wireless Charging, said this about the new IKEA Home Smart range: “Through research and home visits, we know that people hate cable mess. They worry about not finding the charger and running out of power. Our new innovative solutions, which integrate wireless charging into home furnishings, will make life at home simpler.” In addition to the furniture, IKEA is planning to sell a number of wireless charging covers for popular flagship devices sold over the last few years: in practice, this means the last few generations of iPhone and Samsung Galaxy from the iPhone 4 and S3 upwards. In the UK, you’ll be able to buy IKEA’s new Home Smart products online with prices starting from £30.
