MediaTek is becoming more and more present out in the market. At first, this Taiwan-based company has been manufacturing processors for low and mid-range devices, but last year a significant amount of high-end handsets have been deploying MediaTek units. That’s not all though, these chips have been really good performers, Meizu MX4 is a great example, the MT6595 octa-core chip that is powering that handset has been great in both benchmarks and in real life performance. This is just one example of course, there are a significant amount of devices powered by MediaTek’s higher-end chips out there.
Quite recently (Q4 2014), MediaTek has released their MT6795 64-bit octa-core processor, and that thing showed great benchmark results thus far, and is aiming to compete with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 octa-core chip. If you’d like to know more details about this, check out this article which will fill in the gaps. It seems like MediaTek has no intention of slowing down now, the company will release a bunch of new chips this year, including a 20nm MT6796 64-bit chip at the very end of 2015. If you take a look at the image below the article, you’ll see MediaTek’s leaked roadmap which will give you a good insight what MediaTek intends to launch, and when. We can expect smartphones to deploy this MediaTek’s chip in Q3 2016 at the earliest though, but it seems like this company is doing better than some people have expected. As a side note, Samsung has recently introduced their newest Exynos 7420, built on a 14nm architecture, which makes it 30-35% better in handling power consumption, in other words, it’s really power efficient and it performs great.
The competition in the SoC world is heating up, we have three really big players out there at the moment, Qualcomm, Samsung and MediaTek. Qualcomm is still very much the leader out in the market, but MediaTek and Samsung are doing really good as well. Huawei’s HiSilicon chips could join the battle as well soon enough, at the moment they’re not exactly used outside of Huawei-branded devices. That being said, do you think that MediaTek and Exynos chips are a threat to Qualcomm?
