Kwikset Kevo’s Android Companion App Supporting Android 5.0 And Up Leaves Beta

Kwikset Kevo

With all the advancement in smart home technology and connected devices, it was only a matter of time before we started to see things around the home like door locks get smarter too. While smart connected door locks have been around since at least last year, there are undoubtedly many that are yet to be released. If you’re in the market for a smart door lock that can either be your first smart home purchase or an addition to an already growing set of connected appliances, lighting and other things, consider taking a look at the Kwikset Kevo. The Kevo is a lock that is Bluetooth enabled so you can connect it up to your smartphone and use your device as a way to unlock the doors when arriving home, not by tapping the phone mind you, but by tapping your finger on the door lock when your phone is in proximity.

The Kwikset Kevo while having launched earlier last year, their companion application was only just released as a public beta back in December. That application is now out of beta and is available to everyone in the Play Store who has a Kwikset Kevo lock and will be needing the app to complete the various functions the lock is capable of. The app itself is free to install,(the locks of course are not free, but if you’re installing them yourself all it will cost you is time)and it even pairs up with a Nest smart thermostat so that when you unlock the door upon arrival, the Kwikset Kevo automatically tells your Nest to set the temperature to your desired and configured settings.

The only downside to Kwikset Kevo’s companion app is that it is only compatible with Android 5.0 Lollipop and up right now, and there aren’t a whole lot of devices running on that software yet, although many devices are scheduled to get the updates in the following months ahead. The app lists the compatible devices as the Nexus 9, Nexus 6, and the Samsung Galaxy S5. In time there will be more supported devices of course, and hopefully at some point they’ll add support for devices running on older version of software as well. The Kwikset Kevo itself will run you about $200 on Amazon.
