Christmas may be a distant memory by now and the thought of Christmas 2015 might seem just as distant, as April has only just begun. However, it seems Christmas is not too far away from Google’s mind today, as the Search giant have just opened sourced their popular Santa Tracker software. If you are unfamiliar with Santa Tracker, then it is rather self-explanatory. Each year, around about Christmas time, Google releases its Santa Tracker offering the ability to track Santa while he is out and about and delivering his presents to all the boys and girls. That said, the tracker software is not just for tracking Santa and this is why last year Google released the Tracker as early as December 1st.
The software contains a whole variety of games and little fun inclusions that combine into much more of a Christmas experience, than just tracking Santa like you would track a flight. This year also saw some very interesting additions to the Santa Tracker ecosystem, including the companion android app and even an extension which allowed Santa Tracking notifications to appear in Google Now as a dedicated card. As such the software offers quite the insight into how Google builds its software as a cross platform application.
In fact, this is exactly why Google have now made the software open source, offering those interested in developing the ability to delve into the code which makes up the Santa Tracker application. As such, Google have open sourced the code for the android app, as well as for Android Wear and along with the more traditional web based code. Developers will therefore be able to see how all the parts come together to form the full Christmas experience. In fact, Google states that they hope by releasing the code, developers will be able to come up with their own magical experiences.
