Samsung has announced the Gear VR (Virtual Reality) headset back in September along with the Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge and the Gear S at their pre-IFA launch event. Samsung has developed this thing in collaboration with Oculus and it allegedly offers great virtual reality experience. Unfortunately, you need to own the Galaxy Note 4 as well in order to use it, though future Samsung handsets will also offer the support for this thing quite probably. Either way, the Gear VR has been mentioned quite often lately, and now we have some additional news to share with you.
This Korean company has agreed to a new partnership with an Australian airline Qantas, a company which will make it possible for their passengers to use the Gear VR headset while flying the long distance routes. The Gear VR availability will be limited though, only select Qantas’ A380 flights will offer this commodity in the First Class Lounge. The special Qantas app will be running on the Galaxy Note 4 which has to be inside the Gear VR, of course. This application will show 360-degree view of the first-class lounge at LAX, runway-side videos of the A380 planes landing and taking off and a river boat ride.
“From an inflight entertainment perspective, it’s an industry first. Qantas is committed to being at the forefront of innovation to give our passengers the very best and latest in-flight experiences, like accessing the virtual worlds of their favourite Hollywood blockbusters from the comfort of their seat 40,000 feet above the ground,” said the company in their official press release. Olivia Wirth, Qantas Group Executive added the following: “Whether the user wants a virtual tour of our new Los Angeles First Lounge or experience an A380 landing from the tarmac, this technology gives us a completely new way to connect with our customers.”
Well, that’s it. This is definitely an interesting way to deploy the Gear VR, it remains to be seen how successful will this experiment be in the end, but it’s definitely interesting. Your thoughts? Do you think this is a good use of the Gear VR, have you tried Samsung’s virtual reality headset yet?
