Xiaomi is in the middle of a legal battle with Ericsson over some patents and are partially banned from selling devices in India at the moment. Despite this recent setback, the company has been doing incredibly well this year, they sold three times as many devices this year compared to 2013. The pace at which this company is growing is staggering and it will be interesting to see if they can keep this up and overcome all the obstacles that are in front of them.
The company has recently confirmed that they won’t participate at CES in Las Vegas next month, so the Mi5 launch at the Consumer Electronics Show is out of the questions. The latest rumor does say that the company might choose to implement a sapphire display on their on the phone though, whenever they decide to launch it. If Xiaomi goes through with this, they’ll join the likes of Kyocera which already has smartphone with sapphire screens out in the market which you can even get in the U.S. via Verizon. Huawei and Vivo have also launched sapphire screen smartphones to the market already, though those are available only in Asia at the moment.
Keep in mind that this is just a report from China and is in no way a confirmation of any sort. That being said, do you think this would be a smart move by Xiaomi, or should they stick with Corning’s Gorilla Glass? Corning actually claimed that their layer of protection is actually tougher than sapphire in the end, but that is up for discussion. This switch could of course result in higher prices of Xiaomi’s devices and that would be a really bad thing for the company considering that is one of their main strong points. I actually don’t believe this will happen, but who knows, perhaps the company decides to release a special edition Xiaomi Mi5 or something to that effect, for those of you who want a sapphire protection on the phone’s display. We’ll see, though I believe Xiaomi won’t launch the Mi5 for another couple of months.
