In case you were wondering whether virtual reality headsets like Google Cardboard may have any use outside of converting games to a sort of reality for the players, Jaunt hopes you will find the answer is yes. The company has been working on an immersive camera technology to record “spherical audio and video” for use in different applications. Basically Jaunt has taken the idea of photospheres created with smartphones and really beefed it up with a custom camera setup that can produce high quality renderings. To showcase what can be done, Jaunt recently partnered with Paul McCartney to record one of his recent concerts, the last concert held at Candlestick Park before it was demolished, and has produced a video custom made for Google Cardboard users.
The video is available through an app on Google Play and according to the entry, requires a 5-inch or 6-inch device to go with a Google Cardboard viewer. During the concert, Jaunt used two of their camera rigs to record Live and Let Die. One setup was next to McCartney’s piano while the other was near the front of the stage. Viewers can switch between the two sources when viewing the concert footage and whichever one they are on, they can turn their head to view whatever part of the scene they want to check out.
The process of stitching together all of the video that Jaunt’s multiple cameras generates can be a relatively slow process. However, the result is a file that can be used with most video editors along with audio that can also be placed in three dimension. The filesizes end up being small enough to view even on mobile devices.
Jaunt indicates that this first introduction to what their technology can do will not be limited to Google Cardboard. They plan to release versions that will work with Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR units as well.
