Xiaomi has been in the news recently for (mostly) good reasons – whether it was the recent success of selling 15000 Mi 3 devices in a couple of seconds or the fact that Xiaomi has now beaten Samsung to the number one spot in China, as of Q2 this year. A lot of this success, at least which the company pulled off in China, is attributed to the resounding sales of their budget Redmi line, including the Redmi Note as well as the Redmi smartphone. The Redmi Note was launched in May for mainland China on China Mobile – the largest telecom operator in the mainland with close to 800 million subscribers. Not one to sit on past laurels, Xiaomi was rumored to be working on fixing the only supposed flaw of the Redmi Note – 4G LTE connectivity.
Xiaomi has announced that the budget phablet – Redmi Note – will now have a 4G LTE variant and has been kind enough to release the device’s upgraded specs. The Redmi Note with 4G support bears a 5.5 inch screen, while processing power comes from a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor clocked at 1.6 GHz and 2 GB of RAM. The device is touted to bring a 13 mega pixel (MP) primary camera and will be juiced up thanks to a whopping 3100 mAh battery. In comparison to the older Redmi Note, the new device will also be a shade lighter as it weighs 10 grams lesser. A strong appeal for a Xiaomi device is the price point, and the Chinese manufacturer has been smart enough to keep a budgetary price tag on the Redmi Note (4G). The device is expected to retail for CNY 999 (approximately $162), which is almost half the price of the only other 4G offering from Xiaomi – the upcoming Xiaomi flagship – the Mi 4, which is priced at $322.
The Redmi Note (4G) will be retailing from August 12th onwards and would support China Mobile’s LTE network, which incidentally runs on the 4G LTE 2300 MHz frequency band. What this means for avid US fans is that unless the Redmi Note (4G) supports penta-band 4G (which is highly unlikely), we could see this living out its lifecycle in China or India only – the only two countries who so far run 4G networks on the 2300 MHz band.
