Swype made it to the Google Play Store last year and has since then gotten between 500,000 and 1,000,000 downloads. It has its following since way before it reached the Play Store, but there is always room for improvement. The latest update is hefty and brings forth a healthy list of fixes and enhancements.
Improvements include performance enhancement, better support and bug fixes (as do all updates).
Performance improvements
- Hardware acceleration improves keyboard dismissal time.
- Better response for low-end devices and Chinese keypad.
- Default dictionary words no longer treated as custom words (caused unnecessary activity).
Better support
- Improved user adaptation and word completion for tapped words.
- Better syncing, reduced data usage.
- Burmese & Khmer languages added.
- Swype keyboard will adapt in apps that use menu bars
- Added more Chinese punctuation.
Fixed bugs
- Spell checker no longer suggests English words in other locales.
- Users can now personalize their language with Twitter again.
- Fixed issue where split keyboard would display incorrectly on Samsung KitKat devices.
- Fixed crashes.
That is one long list of improvements! It will be an outstanding update for Swype users, who can now get the update from the Google Play Store.
This happens to be one of our favorite keyboards, so you may as well give it a try if you haven’t. It does cost $3.99, but it is one of the most popular Android keyboards out there.

Swype was the first to make “swyping” popular in the Android platform. Other keyboards like SwiftKey (and many others) have adopted this feature and applied it to their own apps, but people still calls it “swyping”. You can’t take the credit from the pioneers!
