WhatsApp is a great little application. It sums up how to make an app and how to make a very successful one. It is no secret how big this little app has become over the last year, with two very big announcements coming through. The most recent was that WhatsApp boasts over 600,000,000 monthly active users. This is some seriously footfall for a messaging app. As such, it was not a surprise when much earlier in the year, came the announcement that Facebook were purchasing the app. However with as big of a number of users WhatsApp claims comes a big price tag and WhatsApp was no different with the sale finally going through and reported to be costing in the region of $19 Billion. So yes, Whatsapp is a big deal regardless of whether you use (or like) it.
Well, for those that do use and like Whatsapp you might be interested to hear the latest news and gossip. It seems we might very well be seeing a web desktop version of the popular app sometime soon. This is not the first time we have heard rumors like this with rumors of this sort always popping up periodically. That said, none of the previous rumors have come with some form of actual proof like. At least not like we are seeing today. Firstly, the folks over at Android World (source link below) decided to delve into the code of the WhatsApp Android APK and found some interesting things. It seems the code contains a number of references to “WhatsApp Web” which can only be presumed to be a Web client version. You can see references as the highlighted fields in the image below.
If you need a bit more proof then you can try heading over to web.whatsapp.com. Here you will be prompted to sign in with your Google account and as soon as you do you will see a bootloop take effect. Either of these on their own could provide some support that a web version of WhatsApp is approaching but together it does seem like the wheels are in motion. What do you think?
