Back in September, Intel announced its plans to provide an Intel Reference Design for Android (IRDA), which would provide manufacturers with a list of supported hardware that would have guaranteed software support and would reportedly receive new versions of Android no later than two weeks after Google made these updates available (for up to two years after hardware release).
This ambitious plan made it clear that Intel is taking the Android tablet market seriously, and now the first fruits of this effort have arrived. The first tablet comes from German company TrekStor, and while it doesn’t run Lollipop out of the box, the update to Android 5.0 is promised to be coming in very short order.
As for the tablet’s actual specs? The TrekStor xintron i 7.0 is powered by an Intel Atom Z375G Bay Trail processor with 1GB RAM, 8GB storage, microSD and a 7-inch 1280 x 800 resolution display. There’s also a 1.26MP front cam, 5MP rear cam, 802.11n Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth 4.0.
While the first IRDA tablet is for the European market only (and already sold out on Amazon Germany), the bigger takeaway is that Intel seems to have its eyes on Android. We’ve already seen a number of ‘cheap’ Intel Android tablets hit the market over the last year or so, but if Intel can really deliver an experience that includes ultra-fast and frequent updates to Android — there might be more reason to sit up and take notice of what Intel is doing in this space.
