This year is a little different for consumers seeking a Nexus phone because the Nexus 6 will be widely distributed. Carriers will offer the Nexus 6 with an on-contract price, something that has not been done in three years. The Nexus 6 is already available through Google Play in a version that is not bound to any specific carrier. There was some curiosity to see how the device would fare on certain networks.
It turns out, the Nexus 6 works just fine with a SIM card from…. Verizon. And this is right out of the box, no workarounds necessary. Interestingly, there is some belief that this would allow Google to push software updates straight to the device rather than having to wait on Verizon’s approval. Why? Because it is not bound to Verizon.
It remains to be seen whether or not other carrier versions of the Nexus 6 allow for the same kind of SIM-swapping. Taking a Nexus 6 from AT&T and inserting a SIM card from Verizon may not work as we are seeing now.
