Feather – Indie app of the day

Feather review

What is Feather?

Feather is a minimalist media player. It can play both music and videos and it can do so in most codecs. The mission statement of Feather is pretty simple. Cut out the nonsense that people don’t really need and just let them watch some video or listen to some music without the extraneous features that most people don’t use.

As a minimal app, the first thing you’ll notice is that the interface is very simple. In fact, it’s pretty much just a file browser. You browse to the files you want to play and then you play them. That’s really it, folks. Nice and simple. It is worth noting that there are some classy touches here and there. For instance, controls only appear in portrait mode. That means spinning to landscape mode will hide the controls completely and let you just enjoy your video which is a nice touch.

It does have a few extra features. There is playlist support so you can build a playlist of videos and/or songs so you don’t have to back and select everything yourself. The app is semi-transparent which means whatever background you’re using will be used in the app which means it works with pretty much every theme. It’s also a very small application. The free version clocks in at 1MB installed for the free version and 1.8MB for the paid version.

Minimal media at its best.

PROS

  • Very small app (less than 2MB) with a quick and minimal interface offers a fast experience.

  • Plays music and videos using the native Android codecs.

  • Free and paid versions are identical (sans advertising).

  • Small things like hiding controls in landscape mode (they can only be seen in portrait) is a nice touch.

CONS

  • Some bugs here and there depending on your device.

  • If you don't need something very basic and minimal, you don't want this app.

  • If you use a lot of unusual, uncommon, or unpopular codecs, this probably won't work for you.

7.5

Overall, this is a great minimal video and music player. It gets the job done and doesn’t distract you with a bunch of features you may not need. Its small size is great for people with limited internal storage or those who are running out of storage. The free and paid versions are identical except the paid version doesn’t have advertisements. If you want something quick, small, and minimal then this is what you want.
