Android Headliner: Why the Sony Xperia Z3v is great for Sony and the US

Sony Xperia Z3V AH-6

Fresh off the plane from New York where I checked out what Sony and HTC had to show us this week. During my travels back home, I was thinking about the Sony Xperia Z3v quite a bit. I haven’t had the chance to play with the Xperia Z3, as I was in Chicago for Motorola’s event and not Berlin for IFA where the Sony Xperia Z3 was announced. But from my hands on time with the Xperia Z3v, I’m really loving this device. It’ll be available in Verizon stores on October 23rd for $199 on a two-year contract. The Xperia Z3v isn’t really an Xperia Z3. It’s kinda like something in the middle of the Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3. We’ve got a lot of the same specs and build as the Xperia Z2, but with a lot of the Xperia Z3 software.

So why’s this great for Sony and the US? Well for quite some time now, Sony has been trying and trying to crack the US market. While this exclusive still isn’t good, what it does is gets a high-end phone of theirs on two carriers here in the US. Sony already announced back in Berlin that the Xperia Z3 is coming to T-Mobile, Although we have no confirmed release date yet. And now we’ve got the Xperia Z3v over on Verizon. So that’s two of the US carriers with Sony smartphones. That’s a big step for Sony. Especially since we usually see it as an exclusive to one carrier, and about 6 months after it’s been released elsewhere in the world.

I’m no fan of exclusives, and I’m sure everyone knows that. As I think you should be able to choose your carrier, and not so much your phone. For example, if you want the Xperia Z3, but want to stick with AT&T because they work for you where you live, then you should be able too. You shouldn’t need to jump over to another carrier to get that phone. Get my point? But seeing new devices from Sony come to the US, quickly, is something I like seeing. A lot of the time when we see leaks for a Sony smartphone or a tablet, it’s hard to get excited. Because it may or may not come to the US. And if it’s only available unlocked, it’s likely to be pretty expensive. I’m hoping this is turning over a new leaf for Sony, and after talking with some of their execs, it definitely sounds like they are.

Sony makes great smartphones, which makes it sad to see their mobile profits the way they are. Hopefully, getting into the US like this will change that. But what would be even better is to release the Xperia Z3 on all four carriers by November. That would definitely bring up their profits.
