Amoi A955T Lands in China with a 6 core CPU, 2 GB RAM for $145

amoi a955t There was a lot of fuss exactly one year back when MediaTek launched what it called the world’s first octa-core solution for mobile phones, the MT6592. It has, since, proven to be more of a mid-range SoC than a high end one, with the recently launched MT6595 taking place of the latter. While at it, MediaTek also announced a hexa-core mobile chipset — the MT6591 — which didn’t take off nearly as much as either of the aforementioned chipsets. However, a few Chinese and Indian manufacturers have employed the chipset on a few of their smartphones.

The latest in this list of MT6591 powered phones is the Amoi A955T from China. As usual, the device isn’t made to burn a hole in the buyer’s pocket with a price tag of only 899 Yuan / US$145. It comes with a 5.5-inch full HD 1920 x 1080p display and an impressive 2 GB of RAM to go with the 1.5GHz hexa-core MT6591. To keep costs down, Amoi will only ship the phone with 8 GB of on-board ROM, which can however be expanded via the means of a MicroSD card. Besides those numbers, the Amoi A955T comes with a 2 MP front camera, an 8 MP rear camera and a 2500 mAh battery. What is impressive (by Chinese standards, that is) is that the device comes with Android v4.4 KitKat right out of the box. What’s worth noting is that this dual SIM device does 3G only on TD-SCDMA networks, which means that it is highly unlikely that you will get 3G reception unless you’re in China, and on China Mobile’s networks.

I’ve used an MT6591 phone in the past, and am pretty darn impressed by the way the chipset performs. I used the iNew V8, which is an OPPO N1 Mini clone. While the performance was as good as it could get on an entry-level to mid-range phone, there were tonnes of bugs which often made the phone unusable, which made me shift to another device. I hope Amoi is up to the task unlike iNew, and pushes updates often to keep its users on top of their game.
