Xiaomi are an interesting Chinese device manufacturer. Their reputation is that they are a relatively small company and because of this, they cannot afford a production line as many of their competitors do and so their devices are sold in smaller numbers. Xiaomi have only relatively recently started selling their handsets in India exclusively through Flipkart and have been selling 60,000 devices a week. Xiaomi are known for using hunger marketing to help keep customers, and potential customers, interested in their handsets and organise flash sales of devices. Now we have news that Xiaomi are gearing up to nearly double these sales to 100,000 a week according to Company Vice President Hugo Barra.
The Xiaomi Mi3 is one example of Xiaomi’s smartphone products and went on sale in July and was taken off sale towards the end of August after just five weeks. The Mi3 is a high specification smartphone, based around the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2 GB of RAM, a 5.0-inch 1080p screen with a 13 MP rear camera. The Mi3 uses MIUI running over Android 4.4 Kit Kat and was on sale for just 13,999 Indian Rupees, approximately £140 or $230. It now appears that the Mi3 will be back on sale during Diwali when electronic device sales are traditionally very high. If the Mi3 is put back on sale, it’ll join the Redmi 1S and Redmi Note, which are cheaper and lower specification devices. The Redmi 1S is based around a quad core, 1.6 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon, a 720p 4.7-inch display and costs just 5,999 Rupees (£60, $100). The Redmi Note uses an octa core 1.4 GHz MediaTek processor and a 720p 5.5-inch display, for sale at just 8,999 Rupees (£90, £145). All of these devices are inexpensive compared with Western handsets!
These Xiaomi devices run MIUI, Xiaomi’s user interface on top of Android Kit Kat, which has recently been updated to v6. Currently, some of the new features are for the Chinese market only (Xiaomi incorporated a number of their own in-house applications that only work with the Chinese databases). Xiaomi may have plans to improve MIUI’s applications and features to roll out these additional services to other regions. But regardless of Xiaomi’s plan for the applications, it’s good news for Indian smartphone customers that Xiaomi are planning on increasing their sales into the region. What do you think?
