Samsung Gear VR to Retail for $199

Gear VR

Alongside the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge at Unpacked 2014 Episode 2 this week, Samsung announced their Gear VR headset. Which is a lot like Google’s Cardboard or even Oculus Rift. Which shouldn’t be surprising, as Samsung had most of the Oculus Rift team working on this with them. It’s basically a virtual reality headset that allows you to play games on your Galaxy Note 4 through the headset. Which is actually really cool. When Samsung announced it at Unpacked 2014 Episode 2 earlier this week, they didn’t mention the pricing and said that would come later on. But VentureBeat has their Fashion Week going on in New York City right now, and they are reporting that a Samsung official stated that the Gear VR would be priced at $199 when it goes on sale later this year.

Now the Gear VR obviously won’t work without the Galaxy Note 4 being docked inside it. Which is obvious since it uses the Galaxy Note 4’s display to do all the virtual reality stuff. Which means the real price of the Gear VR is $199 plus the cost of the Galaxy Note 4. And the Galaxy Note 4 is likely going to be around $700 full retail, as the previous ones have been around $650-750.

The Galaxy Note 4 is going to be heading to all four major carriers here in the US in October. It features a 5.7-inch QHD AMOLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a 3300mAh battery inside. It’s pretty much a beast in terms of specs. Having a 2560×1440 resolution display in a virtual reality headset is going to be amazing, though. How many of you are interested in the Gear VR? What about the Galaxy Note 4? Are you going to pick up both? Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below.
