While we were at Motorola’s world headquarters in Chicago this week, Motorola dropped some impressive numbers on us. One being that they jumped from 0% to 6% market share in the UK over the past year. Another is that they are now the number one manufacturer in Brazil and has jumped to number three in India since they re-entered that market. They also sold about 60% more phones year over year. Which is a decent jump for a smartphone maker. This is also why Motorola had released all their news about the Moto X, Moto G, Moto Hint and the Moto 360 at 2am ET. Because they were doing an event in India at that time.
Right now, Flipkart has the exclusive in India for selling Motorola handsets. And they are quoting that they’ve sold 1.6 million Motorola smartphones already this year. Which is great, and I’m sure it’ll only increase with the Moto X and Moto G getting upgraded. They didn’t let out specific numbers, but it sounds like the most popular one is the Moto E. Which we can’t be all that surprised at since it’s a great phone, especially at it’s price point. In India, not everyone can afford a top-of-the-line smartphone like the Samsung Galaxy S5. That and those smartphones are also a whole lot more expensive over there.
India is becoming a really big market, not just for Motorola, but Android period. You’ve probably noticed us writing more and more about India lately. And that’s because they’ve got all kinds of cool phones over there from OEMs that we don’t see over here in the US, and probably will never see. Plus they are the first country for Android One. And Google has an event there on September 15th.
How many of you are surprised to see Motorola having success like this, so early into their relaunch of the company?
