While both AT&T and T-Mobile have begun rolling out VoLTE in certain markets and on certain smartphones already, Verizon had informed us a few months ago that they would launch their VoLTE network later this year, but they’d go nationwide all at once. Because their network is able to do that, basically. Well this morning the largest US carrier announced that VoLTE was coming in the next few weeks and customers will get to experience video calling and HD Voice on their VoLTE network.
VoLTE sounds like the next big thing, and well it is. But one has to remember that it only works when you’re in an LTE coverage area. The minute you drop to 3G (which happens to me a lot at home) you won’t simply jump back to the old voice network. You’ll basically lose the call. Simply because you’re switching from GSM back to CDMA, and that doesn’t work well, or at all really. Verizon does say that you will be able to choose which method you want to use to place calls. Whether that be on VoLTE or on CDMA>
Verizon also announced video calling. Which will be cross-carrier. So say you want to place a video call with someone on AT&T or T-Mobile. Well you can. Verizon will bill you through minutes, while everything else is on data. So we’re hoping that Verizon ups their data caps soon, as 2GB is barely enough for everyday things, never mind making calls as well. But then again, data is the new cash cow, so I could see them keeping it the same and raking in even more money.
