Android One Device Could Be Launched As Early As The First Week In September

During Google’s annual developers conference this past June, we heard a lot about a new initiative called Android One. Then in the first half of August, Android One was brought up again, this time with rumors of a September release date. That rumor has been expanded to say that the very first Android One device may launch in India in the first week of September.

Android One is a very interesting and exciting initiative launched by Google in June. The goal is to bring devices that are essentially designed by Google themselves. The design will be down to what materials to use in order to make the devices cost close to $100. OEMs will follow these references and build the devices to be sold in emerging markets. After the device has been manufactured, carriers will be able to add apps that they feel are relevant to the surrounding areas. The whole initiative is much like the Nexus line of devices by Google in that Google will design the device from the ground up. Google will also support software for the devices, again much like the Nexus line, the difference here is the cost.

Android One devices are meant to help bring the next billion users into the smartphone community. Making devices affordable where money is crucial and in small amounts. That’s one of the reasons Android One will be focused in emerging markets. Though when Google announced this initiative, they left out any information as to a release date. Though we were told some specs.

The first Android One device will have a 4.5-inch display, a 5MP rear camera, 1700mAh battery, 1GB of RAM and a quad-core processor. The device will also support dual-SIM and have expandable memory through the SD card slot. All that’s left is for the device to be released, and according to the Economic Times, the first device could be available starting in the first week of September.

When Google first announced Android One, they noted that they’ve teamed up with Indian manufacturers Micromax, Spice, and Karbonn. All three companies have been waiting to release their devices, though it’s unknown which one will be first to release their Android One device-if not all within days of each other. According to the Economic Times, the first Android One devices will cost between 7,000 and 10.00 INR which totals to about $115 to $165 USD.

In terms of software on Android One devices, Google plans to treat them much like the Nexus line. In fact, Google may update the Android One device(s) to Android L, or Lemon Meringue Pie in October. Which is right on schedule for Google to update their Nexus line and select Google Play edition devices.
