Sony’s second generation SmartWatch was an interesting product. It was cheaper and more robust than the Samsung Galaxy Gear, didn’t look as elegant but was easier to add third party functionality. The SmartWatch 2 could act as a remote for most Android smartphones. You could download third party applications via the Google Play Store, receive calls using a Bluetooth headset and even place them, too. The device has successfully engaged with developers and there’s a happening app scene on the Google Play Store with over five hundred applications available and more added each week. But now, it’s rumored that Sony are dropping their existing skinned Android operating system in favor of Android Wear. This could upset a lot of existing SmartWatch fans if the new product is incompatible with the old.
This rumored new smartwatch, the Sony SmartWatch 3, will have a 1.7-inch, 320 x 320 pixel screen and carry IP58 certification. This means it’ll be dust resistant and waterproof beyond one meter. We are optimistic that it’ll build on the SmartWatch 2, which offers users an inexpensive and slightly simple wearable experience. In terms of design, this is a squarer model rather than a circular smartwatch. Unfortunately, we don’t have a reliable picture of the SmartWatch 3 as the only images available are renders, but the rumor states that the device looks similar to the Samsung Galaxy Gear Neo. The second wearable piece of Sony technology is the successor to the health-driven SmartBand, released earlier in the year. The new SmartBand Talk will feature a curved E Ink display and use Bluetooth to communicate with a smartphone. Presumably, it’ll include a microphone and speaker to make and receive calls but details are scant.
The first SmartBand is described as a “life log” device, designed to work 24 / 7. It requires Android 4.4, Bluetooth 4 Low Energy and Sony’s free Life Log software running on your device. The unit contains a vibration motor and three LEDs for notifications. The software can determine the best time to wake you up based on your sleep cycle. Sony describes that the SmartBand gently vibrates after your last dream so we can expect the newer model to include these features and more, too. We don’t have long to wait until the new Sony products are revealed and given their experience with wearable technology, I’m excited to see what the Japanese manufacturer comes up with.
