You’d think that Niantic Labs, the Google owned company responsible for the popular Augmented Reality game Ingress and the upcoming AR game Endgame, would simply be about games. That’s where they started, and they’re good at it. On the contrary though Niantic Labs has another app out on the Play Store that really has nothing to do with games. It’s called Field Trip, and the awesome thing is that it has recently gotten a new update that gives it support for Google Now. Field Trip is a location based information application that works in the background as you walk around and explore, so there’s no need to really interface with it until the app needs to feed you information.
How will you know when that is? You don’t really need to know, because Field Trip knows. When you pass something interesting that has some cool information about it, Field Trip will notify you and pop up a card on screen with the details for you to read about it. Just like Niantic’s game Ingress which can be more enjoyable with the use of headphones, if you throw in a pair of earbuds or put on a pair of headphones when Field Trip feeds you something to read about what’s around you, the app can read the details and information to you much like an audio book.
The Google Now support and integration of Field Trip info into your Google Now cards makes using the app all the more simple, and certainly makes things readily accessible as Google Now is something that most of us are probably familiar with at this point and have used quite a bit. With Google Now support, when you have multiple cards you can swipe through them up or down to flip through and browse the next or previous cards. The card based interface seems like a better implementation simply because you can go and retrieve the details from Google Now any time you wish, and the cards are easy to read and quite user friendly. New users might be more prone to reading the details from this app through the Google Now card since they might already be used to Google Now. In any case, if you haven’t checked out Field Trip yet give it a shot and see what interesting things pop up around you.
