It was only a few months ago when we thought the Nexus program was dead.
But then came rumors of Volantis, HTC’s codenamed 9-inch Nexus tablet to be released alongside Android L this fall.
Since we hadn’t heard much regarding a new Nexus phone to come out this fall, we were perplexed, but assumed that a new phone would not be coming. Until now.
New rumors suggest that Motorola is currently working on a large (5.9-inch display) phone codenamed “Shamu,” to be part of the Nexus program and be released this fall alongside HTC’s Volantis and Android L.
Although it’s not the wackiest thing to ever happen, it’s interesting that Motorola is working with Google so soon after it had been sold off to Lenovo. Of course, it would also make sense that this project had been in the works for quite some time now.
The phone is rumored to have a fingerprint scanner. Screen resolution is unknown. Target release date is set for November, but we’ll see where that actually ends up — things tend to change quickly regarding these types of things.
In the picture above, you’ll see the mysterious Shamu device appear in Google’s issue tracker.
The information about the issue tracker comes from Spirent Communications, a company that tests devices for errors. It would make sense that they would have their hands on the device.
Take all this information with a grain of salt, as this is all the information we currently have, but since the release date is set so close to the rumored Volantis’ projected release, as well as Android L, this isn’t too much of a stretch. Also, the phone is running a Google-built kernel. (That pretty much screams Nexus right there.)
It’s also important to note that Google has referenced sea creatures in its Nexus phone code names in the past — tilapia and maguro have been past code names, for example. Shamu, of course would continue this pattern. (Shamu, being a whale, would make sense to be the code name for an oversized Nexus phone, as well.)
In honor of the new (rumored) Nexus phone, I leave you with a pretty awesome video of the Shamu Rocks show at Sea World San Diego.
