LG Looks The Other Way Over G Watch Charging Pin Corrososion

AH Google IO 2014 LG G Watch (9 of 10)

Both the first two Android Wear smartwatches are definitely cool devices. They offer up some awesome features to users who were looking for a smartwatch that was a little more compatible with their device(Gear devices like the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo are only compatible with Samsung phones for example)but as cool as they are, that doesn’t mean they aren’t without their flaws. While users of the Gear Live have reported issues with the connector hole of where the cradle locks in breaking, users of the LG G Watch have recently been complaining about the connector pins on the back of their watch corroding. What’s interesting, maybe even a little bit ironic, is that both problems are leaving users without a way to charge their devices.

The sad thing is that users who have expressed the problem to LG have stated that they’re getting no help at all from the OEM, with one customer stating that LG had finally gotten back to him after an email about the problem. The user, named iborguk, sounds like he felt he was given the cold shoulder from LG with a response that the corrosion issue is not their problem and that they don’t use heavy metals in the manufacturing of the pins that should cause an allergic reaction. When asked if the corrosion could be caused by voltage discharge they basically said no, and that was that leaving iborguk with no help it seems. Multiple users have reported the exact same problem with the charging pins on the back, which makes this not a single case issue.

There are workarounds that one could use if you’re someone who has actually been experiencing this problem yourself, although the best idea might be to contact Google or LG directly and see what they might be able to do for you. The issue seems like it could either be caused by the contact of sweat on the charging pins, causing the corrosion, or some think that it might be an allergic reaction. In either case your alternatives to having the item refunded or replaced if you’re worried about this becoming a problem, are to cover the contacts with insulation tape like some users are doing during use or you could pick up a strap that covers the back and the charging pins like a 22mm NATO strap, suggested by one user where this problem was being expressed. Hopefully this a problem that LG will end up correcting, and without having too many people complaining about it before they take action.
