Chromecast Support coming to the Video Player in Chrome OS Soon?

chromecast

For those of you that use Chromebooks, you’ll know that the Video Player is a part of the files app. Which isn’t the best idea, but it works. However, it appears that the Chrome OS team is looking to separate the Video Player and Files app from each other. The Files app is basically like Finder in OS X or the File Explorer/Windows Explorer in Windows 7/8/8.1. Many of you also know that Chromebooks get updates every 6 weeks, and it looks like the next update to the video player will bring Chromecast support to every Chromebook out there. Which is definitely a great idea. And in all honesty, I’m sort of surprised it hadn’t happened already.

Right now there is a work around to cast to your Chromecast-enabled TV with your Chromebook, but it’s not as seamless or pretty. Basically you have to load it up in Chrome and use the Chrome extension to cast it over to your TV. Not the easiest thing to do. But thanks to this update, it looks like it’ll be much easier to do, and likely you’ll see a Chromecast icon next to the full screen icon in the video player. We’ve also seen where Chromebooks can stutter quite a bit when casting to Chromecast. So hopefully this fixes that issue pretty soon, as it would be nice to cast your own files from your Chromebook to the TV without any stuttering or lagging issues.

So far there’s no word as to when this feature will be baked into Chrome OS, but it’s likely to hit the developer channel first then move to beta and on to stable. As most new features do. There is already a commit out there, so it shouldn’t be too long before we see an update that includes this feature. How many of you are excited to get the ability to cast from the video player in Chrome OS?
