MyGlass App Is Now Officially Available Through The Play Store For Non-U.S. Residents

AH Google Glass

Google continues to make forward strides with Google Glass, this time through the availability of the MyGlass app that was previously only available to U.S residents when attempting to download it from the Play Store. Although updates to the actual Glass software are nice and they are much appreciated by the Glass community especially when they improve things or add in new features, little things like this(which could actually be looked at as a major improvement)make for a more enjoyable experience for those who are involved. In this case, we’re referring to the Glass Explorers.

Google has officially made the MyGlass app available for download to anyone, regardless of region locale through the Play Store. This means you don’t have to grab the apk file from outside the Play Store if you don’t reside in the U.S., which leaves no room for potential apk tampering since it isn’t coming from a third party location, and users who can now download the MyGlass app that couldn’t prior to now also have the benefits of auto updates through the Play Store whenever Google updates the app. That will save Explorers time of having to consistently track down the latest apk file and download it after an update goes through, which might only be a few minutes but for some, taking the time to find the latest apk file when pushed to users officially is both less safe and could take a good portion of their precious time.

If you’re a Glass Explorer from a non-U.S. region this should delight you for those reasons listed above, however if you still like the option of having access to the apk files for MyGlass you can always grab them whenever you need thanks to the team at Google Glass Geeks who is still hosting the apk files for anyone who wants them. That includes older files as well as the most up to date. Plenty of users may have already been aware of this fact, but we’re sure that someone somewhere, or groups of people in various places have yet to realize that the Play Store now officially allows downloads of My Glass for anyone, anywhere.

HTC opening up Zoe availability to rival Android devices this week, looks to branch out software business

Zoe Google Play screenshot

There’s no question HTC’s software team is a talented group of folks, creating not only one of the most beautifully designed skins for their Android devices, but some of the most useful apps and services as well. As it turns out, a successful future in mobile hardware is only one area the company is gunning for, with the logical move to software being the other.

Kick off the manufacturer’s new interest and creating apps and services for everyone — not just their devices — is HTC Creative Labs, the company’s new software business unit. Headed by Drew Bamford, the 260 man group will open up availability of Zoe to rival Android devices in the Play Store later this week. For those unfamiliar with HTC devices, Zoe is HTC’s custom built video app that captures a short burst of video and images at the same time. This images and videos can later be compiled into a more lengthy 30 second video, complete with a soundtrack and theme to go along with it.

But Zoe isn’t only a tool for creating unique content, it’s also a social hub of sorts where others can help contribute to your videos by adding their own media. It sounds rather complicated, but we’re HTC is planning on making things as user friendly as possible. Because Zoe will launch in beta, expect only a few high-end handsets to be compatible with the app.

It also appears that Zoe is only the beginning. HTC told Re/code they’re have other software projects in the making, but was mum on any sort of details. With HTC’s exclusive software being one of the main selling points to their hardware, it will be interesting to see how this new move plays out. As the underdog in our current smartphone market, it’s definitely nice to see someone making taking risks like this.

We’ll keep you updated on Zoe when it officially launches in the Google Play Store later this week.

Google Job Posting Sounds Like Retail Stores Could Be On The Way, But Likely Isn’t The Case

AH Google Logo Colored 1.6

We have heard of Google opening retail brick and mortar stores in the past, but thus far the closest we’ve seen to that reality is the Google pop up sections living within Best Buy(and other electronic stores)that house various Google products, like Chromebooks, the Nexus devices, Chromecast dongles, accessories and Play Store gift cards. That’s all well and good and even though Best Buy is certainly one of the absolute worst shopping experiences you’ll have as a customer of any business that has a retail outlet, at least it’s something. That could change though as Google has recently posted a new job up on their jobs board for a position titled as “Manager of Store Operations” set in the North America region. This could be evidence that we might finally be getting some Google Store locations spread out across the U.S. where consumers could go to purchase Google Products and get a hands on experience with knowledgeable help, similar to the experience customers get when they visit an Apple store. As much as we like to joke about Apple sometimes, the staff at their retail stores are usually extremely friendly, they know their stuff, and they’re helpful.

Before we get too ahead of ourselves here though it’s entirely possible that Google is merely looking for someone to fill a role, that manages the Google partnered businesses that house Google products like we see in Best Buy. The job posting states, “In this role as North America Manager of Store Operations, under the guidance of the Head of Americas Store Operations, you are accountable for day-to-day operations of Google in-store activities for US and Canada. This includes Carrier Retailers, Big Box and other Consumer Electronics and Specialty Retailers.” In truth, that is exactly what it sounds like Google needs although we can’t rule out the possibility that this person would also oversee operations for potential and official Google Stores. There are multiple references though to dealing with the customers and employees of businesses that are already vendors for Google products. It’s a nice thought to think that we could in the future have official Google retail stores where one could go and interact with all kinds of Google devices, get help and support for stuff they already own, and just generally learn about the devices and other products Google has to offer, but that probably isn’t the case here.

Screenshot 2014-08-12 at 5.02 The Escort SmartRadar is, unsurprisingly, a radar detector. What's perhaps more surprising is the Android app that comes with it. This piece of software lets users measure speed and receive warnings for upcoming speed traps. Someone out there may have a use for this, and said person may just like to know that the product is currently available for just $179.95 following a coupon code. This reduces the price down to $20 lower than what we saw it going for the last time around and $70 less than its current price on Amazon.

TapPath for Android: the ultimate tap customization tool

The Google Play Store has become so rich in app selection that it’s hard to get impressed by new apps. We get the seasonal game changer, though. TapPath is here to revolutionize the way we see tapping (or clicking) on Android.

The application is unique in that it allows you to customize how you want a tap to react, depending on how it’s done. It’s a bit hard to fathom, because we haven’t quite explored these features in mobile platforms. It’s easier to think of it like the right-button or wheel in a mouse, which will perform different functions when pressed.

A single tap on a link will do what you expect – open a page on your browser. What if you double tap? You could set such action to open another app, such as Link Bubble or Pocket. A triple tap could be set to launch another app of your choice. It gives you the freedom to personalize your tapping and link experience as you wish.

The app is very simple and will bring you a whole new experience. Not surprisingly, the app is made by the same developer who created Link Bubble. Chris Lacy is selling this helpful tool for just $0.99, so go get it from the Google Play Store if you want to give it a good try.

I have downloaded it and it works like a charm, but I have only tested it for some minutes. Be sure I will let you know if I find any problems with it. And don’t forget to give us your 2 cents if you happen to download it.

Link Bubble developer launches new app, TapPath – lets you customize where links take you inside apps

TapPath for Android screenshots

Chris Lacy is definitely one of our favorite Android developers in the Google Play Store. You may remember his work from the phenomenal job he did on Link Bubble, an app that flexes Android’s multitasking muscle by pulling up a floating web browser on top of the app you’re currently in. Today, he’s introducing TapPath, his latest app to his Google Play.

Priced at $1, TapPath allows users to customize the way links inside of apps behave according to the amount of times you tap on them. For instance, when tapping on a link inside of Twitter, you can set it so the Link Bubble will open with 1 tap, Chrome will open with 2 taps, or the standard Android share menu with 3 taps. It’s simple and potentially useful enough that we’ve already given it a download. If you think your life could greatly benefit from TapPath, you can find the download link down below.
