5 months after release, Android Lollipop is on just 5.4% of devices

april-android-versions

It’s time once again to check in on Android distribution numbers. Google has released the stats for this month. As expected, Android Lollipop is on slightly more devices. Last month Lollipop was on 3.3% of devices, and now it’s up to 5.4%. We should see this number increase a lot more next month after the Samsung Galaxy S6 and HTC One M9 have been available longer.

For those of you paying extra close attention you can see that Android 5.1 is only on 0.4% of devices. KitKat and Jelly Bean are still leading the way with over 80% of the pie. It’s no surprise that Android updates take a while to reach devices, but these charts don’t always tell the whole story. “Lollipop” is really Google’s own version of Android, just like TouchWiz or Sense. It’s not fair to expect other manufacturers to be on the same level as Nexus devices.

Hopefully next month we see more devices experiencing the sweet taste of Lollipop. Is your device running Lollipop yet?

New Video Sees The Samsung Galaxy S6 Durability Tested By Scratching, Burning And Bending

Smartphones being put through their paces in ‘torture videos’ are nothing new. That said, with the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge attracting as much attention as they have over the last couple of months, seeing one of these two devices being put through their paces is even more interesting. Well, a new video which has just gone live by JerryRigEverything does exactly that. Puts the Galaxy S6 through its paces in a number of durability tests.

During the five minute video, the tests performed, look to see how durable the device is under more extreme stress induced circumstances. To provide an overview, the video begins with the Galaxy S6 receiving the key scratching treatment. This quickly escalates to screwdriver treatment and even a razor blade scratching. Following on from this, the Galaxy S6 is then put through a heat durability test, by seeing its metal frame held against a naked lighter flame to test whether it will scorch or burn. As might be expected with a more plastic based frame. This is also followed by the screen receiving the same burning treatment from the lighter. Lastly, the tests involves a bend test to see if it does suffer in the same way in which had been noted by the iPhone 6, as well as in an earlier reported video of the Galaxy S6 Edge being bent at a similar pressure level as the iPhone.

All in all, the Samsung Galaxy S6 holds up well and does provide some good insight into how the device is built and what the real world limits may be for the device. Of course, some of the tests are slightly more extreme than what is likely to be incurred by a premium device during normal life and stresses. However, when paying a premium price for a device, it is good to see that it contains a premium build as well as premium specs. You can check out the full video for yourself by clicking play below. Likewise, if you want to see another device being put through its own torture video, then check out the LG G Flex 2 being run over, dunked, dropped and shot by clicking here.

HTC One M7 Google Play Edition Getting Android 5.1 Too!

HTC One M7 HD AH 12

Yesterday, we reported that the HTC One M8 Google Play Edition was getting it’s second Lollipop update in the form of Android 5.1. Now it appears that the HTC One M7 Google Play Edition is joining in on the action. The update is now rolling out via OTA, and should be hitting your device rather soon. Because it is a Google Play Edition device, it is just stock Android, and no Sense 6 or Sense 7 on top. Which is why you get the update so much quicker these days. The HTC One M8 and One M7 will likely get the Android 5.1 update in a few months, but HTC does have to bake it in with their Sense 7 update, so it may take a bit longer. And there may be some issues along the way, although we’re hoping there won’t be any.

The HTC One M7 Google Play Edition was one of the first Google Play Edition devices, behind the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition back in 2013. Google shocked us by offering a flagship device from HTC and Samsung – along with their names and branding – with AOSP on board. Although there were a few add ons for Boomsound and the 4MP UltraPixel camera on the HTC One M7. But the bigger surprise was the price. It was essentially the same price as buying one of these phones unlocked, and of course it was US only as Google likes to do so often. So I doubt that Google sold a lot of Google Play Edition devices, especially since they don’t work with Sprint and Verizon. But I do know a few people who are going to love their Android 5.1 update on the HTC One M7 Google Play Edition.

The OTA is about 244MB in size, so it’s not a huge update, but bigger than just a normal bug fixer. You can head into Settings > About Phone > Check for Updates and see if you can pull down the update now. Make sure you’re on WiFi before downloading it, or you’re going to eat up quite a bit of data, and it’ll likely take longer to download.

OnePlus One In India Not To Incur Similar Price Rise As Europe

OnePlus-One-out2

Since the OnePlus One went on sale (to those who could score an invite) almost a year ago, the device has quickly evolved into a popular choice. This is largely due to its decent specs mixed in with a very affordable price (compared to other manufacturers). Although it has been almost a year since the device was made available, its availability still remains limited. Firstly, due to the invite system which still remains in place (in spite of an open availability on Tuesdays) and secondly, due to the number of countries in which the device can be purchased from.

At launch, the One was available to sixteen countries. Over the year that availability was extended slowly to India and then also to Indonesia. In fact, very recently OnePlus announced that the One was now available to a number of additional European companies, which saw the biggest increase in availability of the device to date. That said, by controlling the availability of where the device was available, has offered the company the ability to more effectively control a consistent pricing structure across regions. Ensuring the One remains affordable in all territories. However, very recently in Europe, the One has seen a bit of a price hike. While OnePlus pride themselves on offering a device or a competitive price, the reasoning provided for the hike was due to the instability of the Euro which in turn has resulted in the One needing to be marked at a higher price rate in that region.

Well, this price rise immediately started speculation as to whether the One’s price would rise in other regions too. India included. The speculation was further fueled by increases in custom duty in India which had recently been announced in the 2015 budget. Which in turn was expected to have a knock-on effect for the One. However, Vikas Agarwal, India General manager of OnePlus, made it clear that there was no intention to raise the price of the One in India. According to Agarwal “we assure our users that we are constantly evaluating what works best for them; part of that is to continue to make the One available at an attractive price point.” As such, it looks the one will remain at Rs. 18,999 ($305) for the 16GB version and Rs. 21,999 ($353) for the 64GB variant for now.
