OxygenOS By OnePlus Now Released And Available To Download

oxygen

If you own a OnePlus One then the last few weeks have been an intense few. OnePlus announced a few weeks back that they would be finally making available an Android 5.0 Lollipop based OS for the OnePlus One in the form of OxygenOS. This is a homegrown OS, built by the team and seeing the first major step in the company’s foray into an independent OS for their device. The release date was scheduled for March 27th. However, as that date neared, the OnePlus team hinted that it was unlikely that OxygenOS would launch on its scheduled March 27th date.

The reason given for the delay was that they had yet to receive certification for Oxygen from Google. As such, the waiting game began for owners of the One. OnePlus did immediately understand that this would be an issue of frustration for OnePlus One owners and as such announced they would release daily updates. Well, just over a week after the initially scheduled roll-out date and it looks like OxygenOS has finally arrived,

OnePlus announced this morning on their blog that OxygenOS is now available, certified and released. For those that missed the earlier reports, this is not an OTA (over-the-air) update and does require manual installation of the update to your device, aka flashing. Although this is an official and final build, it is worth noting that there are a number of ‘known issues’ being listed. these include “When printing images, printer service may stop, Cannot hang up a call using headphone controls (intermittent), OTG can only recognize FAT32 file system, During system update, display of wifi/data notification may be incorrect, During system update, display of version number may be incorrect, Files sometimes crash when uploading files to the cloud, Files may crash when renaming image files and Files does not support multi-select deletes.”

OnePlus have also released an app which can be installed and used to provide feedback to the team on your experience with Oxygen. As such, if you have been waiting to bring your One up to Android Lollipop and via the OnePlus homegrown version, then now is your chance. You can read the full installation instructions by clicking the source link below. Alternatively, if you want to jump straight to the manual download link then click here to head over to the main OxygenOS page. There you will find the direct download link for both OxygenOS and the accompanying app. You can also check out the video below highlighting some of the features you can expect when running OxygenOS.

Evernote 7 Arrives For Android Tablets

In mid-March, Evernote got a nice update to version 7.0 with a more "material" look and feel, a new navigation drawer, revised FAB, custom quick notes, and a few other goodies. At the time though, the overhaul was only pushed out to phones (with Evernote maintaining the mysterious "varies with device" version status in the Play Store).

As of yesterday, Evernote says 7.0 is going out to Android tablets as well.

Google Play Store 5.4 brings more immersive listings for Lollipop users, rolling out today

Google Play Store 5.4 update hero images resized

It feels like it wasn’t too long ago that the Google Play Store added those fancy colored status bars. It wasn’t that big a deal, just something that was introduced in KitKat. Today, Googler Kirill Grouchnikov is revealing some new changes making their way onto Google Play starting today, but it’s only for users running Lollipop.

Evolution of the Google Play Store’s listings page

Once again, it’s not a big change, just a little something Android fans will get a kick out of. The Play Store now features transparent status bar when viewing listings, going full-on immersive in the latest update (Google Play 5.4). With the hero images for listings slowly inching higher up on your phone’s display, more content can be displayed below without scrolling. And that’s pretty neat.

Mailbox gets a fresh coat of Material Design in latest update

mailbox

Another popular app is getting a fresh coat of Material Design. This time it’s the Dropbox-owned email app, Mailbox. If you’ve never used Mailbox it’s the app that started the craze of snoozing emails. Many apps have adopted that feature, but Mailbox was one of the first to implement it, long before Google Inbox came around.

With this update you can expect the normal smattering of Material goodies. A new floating action button allows you to create new emails, the slide-out drawer is cleaner, and the Search button has been moved to the top bar. Mailbox is a really nice email app if you’re someone who struggles to get to “inbox zero.” It treats emails more like a to-do list, which forces you to take action or archive. Not everyone will like that approach, but it’s free and worth a shot.

What email app do you use on your phone?

Android Studio 1.2 Reaches Beta, Adds Built-In Decompiler, Inline Debugger Variables, Smarter Formatting, And So Much More

android-studio

When Android Studio v1.1 entered the Stable channel, about 6 weeks ago, the Dev Tools team gave word that v1.2 was already well underway and that it would be based on the newly released IntelliJ 14. A couple of weeks later, the first preview build turned up, and it had already been upgraded to include IntelliJ 14.1, as well. Developers on the Canary channel have been testing and playing with the new features since early March, and now it's time to bring the goods to a larger audience.
