12 best Android platform games

android platform games

Platform games are among the longest running genres in all of video games. They’ve been around since they invented graphics and they’re still among the most popular and fun games available today. This also holds true on Android and we believe it’s because touch screen controls translate very well in this genre. Let’s take a look at the best Android platform games.

Badland android platform gamesBADLAND

[Price: Free with in app purchases]

First up is BADLAND which gained popularity for being well designed and fun to play. It’s a 2D side-scrolling platform game where you must navigate obstacles and complete levels. The game is free to try but eventually you have to play for the later levels. It’ll probably win some awards this year for its great design and colorful graphics along with its fluid game play. It’s worth a download to try out!

cordy 2 android platform gamesCordy 2

[Price: Free with in app purchases]

Cordy 2 is a more traditional 2D platformer where you control a robot as you navigate levels, platforms, puzzles, and obstacles. You can also get powers to help you along the way and there are the usual spread of bad guys and boss fights. There are 53 total levels which is a good length for a platformer and you can play the first six levels for free to see if you like it. There are also two other Cordy games including the first iteration and Cordy Sky. You can find those by clicking here.

edge extended android platform gamesEDGE Extended

[Price: $2.99]

EDGE Extended is a different kind of platform game. Instead of controlling a character and jumping around to avoid bad guys, you instead play as a block and you kind of block around and do block things. It’s more fun than it sounds as you have to navigate obstacles and solve puzzles to get from level to level. It’s $2.99 and rocks an incredible 4.8 rating in the Google Play Store. People love this game because it’s a really good game and it is a little something different in the platformer genre.

granny smith android platform gamesGranny Smith

[Price: $1.99 with in app purchases]

Granny Smith is a unique platformer. You must play as Granny Smith on her roller skates as you chase down the apple thief. The game play is fairly entertaining especially when you watch the old lady crash through windows, roofs, and various other obstacles like she’s Juggernaut. It’s a lot of fun, it’s ridiculous, and it’s highly rated. That means it’s worth a look!

leo's fortune android platform gamesLeo’s Fortune

[Price: $2.99]

Leo’s Fortune gained popularity after it was demoed at Google I/O 2014 on the Android TV. It’s a highly rated adventure platform game where you play as Leo who has had his fortune stolen. It features colorful, sharp graphics with a pseudo steampunk theme. The game play is fluid, fun, and there are some unique obstacles to keep you guessing. Each level has three stars so you’ll likely have to play a number of them again. A lot of people love this game and chances are that you will too.

Get it on Google Play

MEGATROID android platform gamesMEGATROID

[Price: Free with in app purchases]

MEGATROID is a mix between Megaman and Metroid. They changed just enough (or have flown under the radar enough) to not warrant any lawsuits yet and the game is pretty fun. You play as a robot (presumably) and you run, wall jump, and shoot bad guys. As you play you can get all sorts of power ups and weapons and you can buy some if you so choose using in app currency. If you’re a fan of Megaman and Metroid style games then you’ll probably enjoy this one.

Get it on Google Play

Mikey Shorts android platform gamesMikey Shorts

[Price: Free]

Mikey Shorts is a free platformer that isn’t all that difficult but it can still be fun. The controls are easy to learn and are customizable and you’ll have to jump, run, and slide to avoid walls and obstacles. It has received flack for being a little too easy but that’s very subjective. This is a great game for younger audiences and it is totally free.

Get it on Google Play

Prince of Persia android platform gamesPrince of Persia Shadow & Flame

[Price: $2.99 with in app purchases]

Prince of Persia games are one of the highest rated platform empires on consoles and it appears as though developers are going to try it on mobile as well. Shadow & Flame is $2.99 with in app purchases which may scare off some people but the game is still pretty fun. You’ll be solving puzzles, sword fighting, and jumping around to complete levels. It’s been adapted for touchscreen game play but they haven’t done as well with third party controller support. Thus, if you use something like Moga, you may get not enjoy this one so much.

Get it on Google Play

android platform gamesRayman (both of them)

[Price: $2.99 (each)]

Rayman was a popular title back during the PlayStation days and it’s now back on Android. It’s a more classic 2D platformer where you must jump around, kill bad guys, collect things, and complete levels. This is a great title for the nostalgia crowd and it gets pretty difficult as you progress. Each game also packs a ton of levels which will keep you busy for a while. If you’re a fan of the old Rayman series then try these out!

Get it on Google Play

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 android platform gamesSonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2

[Price: $2.99]

Sega has done a great job bringing Sonic to Android and in terms of platform games, it’s one of the best of all time. Everyone knows who Sonic is and literally everyone who owned a Sega Genesis played this game. They’re $2.99 each and you already know what you’re in for if you pick them up. The controls have translated well to touchscreen and after a couple of minutes you’ll be running and spinning around like you used to.

the cave android platform gamesThe Cave

[Price: $4.99]

The Cave is an eccentric platform game out of Double Fine Productions which are known for their awesome PC games. In The Cave you play as a number of characters (all with their own stories) as you move around and play inside of, you guessed it, a cave. The fun part is that you must play with several characters and switch between them to solve puzzles. It also has decent graphics. It’s $4.99 but there are no in app purchases.

Get it on Google Play

wind up knight android platform gamesWind-up Knight 1 and 2

[Price: Free with in app purchases]

Wind-up Knight 1 and 2 are 3D platformers that have earned praise for their good graphics and solid game play. You run around as a wind-up knight that slashes down bad guys and moves around obstacles. Some people prefer the first one over the second one so we recommended them both. They’re both free with in app purchases so it won’t cast you anything to check them out to see if you like them.

APPoint – Indie app of the day

What is APPoint

APPoint is an Android app that opens a floating window on any screen. Inside of that floating window is essentially an app drawer that is populated with apps that you choose. Using an app like this you can quickly switch apps no matter what is on your home screen which is great for multitasking.

Here’s how it works. There are two versions which are the trial version and the paid version. The trial version is limited to four applications while the paid version allows you far more. When you set up the app, you’ll put your favorite apps in using the plus symbol. Then a floating icon (much like Facebook’s chat heads) will be omnipresent. Simply tap on that and the window will open so you can access all of your applications.

It also comes with some customization features. You can change the color of the upper and lower banners to suit your theming needs. There are also four categories so you can organize your apps better including games, tools, apps, and system apps. You can also use the space to put toggles that let you turn off and on a variety of things like Bluetooth, WiFi, etc. You can also change the color of the floating icon to match your theme if you need to.

APPoint review

Your app drawer everywhere!

PROS

  • Uses a floating icon to give you access to a customizable app drawer from anywhere.

  • Four categories let you organize your apps.

  • You can add toggles that enable and disable things like GPS, WiFi, etc.

  • The window and floating icon colors can be changed if need be.

CONS

  • The interface could use a little polish. It can be themed but those who are looking for more sophisticated design may be turned off.

  • There are a few bugs here and there.

7.5

Overall it’s a solid app that does what it says it does. The paid version costs $1.89 which is very reasonable. There are some small issues here and there and the interface could use a little work. The bottom line is that this is a pretty decent app that is definitely worth checking out.

Enable Automatic Photo Uploads In The Microsoft OneDrive App To Double Your Free Storage To 30GB

unnamed (21) Most cloud storage apps have a few things in common these days. One: free online storage measured by the gigabyte. Two: an Android app. Three: a feature that automatically uploads new photos taken on your phone or tablet to the service. Microsoft really wants you to take advantage of that last one, and to encourage users to do so, they're giving them even more of the first one.

kdOK8ZP

According to this blog post, Microsoft is doubling its already generous 15GB storage allowance for free users if they enable the "camera roll" (automatic photo upload) feature.

Enable Automatic Photo Uploads In The Microsoft OneDrive App To Double Your Free Storage To 30GB was written by the awesome team at Android Police.

TalkAndroid Weekly Recap for September 15 – September 21, 2014

TalkAndroid_Weekly_Recap

It was a rather slow week, but there were some interesting things. Android One was officially launched for the next 5 billion people. The Galaxy Note 4 goes on pre-order, but does it stand a chance against the iPhone 6 / 6 Plus? Speaking of pre-orders, the Moto X 2014 is also available. Will it rise above the original? We seem to be getting closer to a new DROID launch on Verizon. Is turbo charging enough to make it successful or does Motorola and Verizon have something else up their sleeves? Oh yeah, Amazon announced new Kindle tablets. That’s right more devices with forked versions of Android. Woo Hoo!! It’s time to get caught up and get ready for what is sure to be another interesting week in the Android world.

PIPO To Launch The First 4G LTE Tablet With A MediaTek Processor

PIPO H3

The Chinese smartphone market is quite different to that elsewhere in the world with generally a much wider selection of companies and products on offer. Another example of the different between the Chinese and in particular the US market is the difference in quality. While the US market is preoccupied greatly with specs a lot of time the Chinese market looks to offer a wider selection of budget devices. A good example of this is with the use of processors. The majority of smartphones being released in the US at the moment will almost certainly claim to use Qualcomm’s mighty Snapdragon range of processors. This in itself is a selling point for the device and why you will see it listed on any device that contains one…even if the processor is a low budget Qualcomm. However in China the processor market is not so dominated with Qualcomm and instead MediaTek seems to do rather well. Although recently MediaTek processors are becoming better known in the US they are still more commonly seen in lower-end or budget devices compared to the flagship devices.

The tablet market is a little different to the smartphone market as it seems the highest spec processors seem to take longer to hit devices than they do in the smartphone world. It is not sure if this is due to the manufacturers placing greater emphasis on smartphones or if consumers simply are more forgiven in this respect. Either way PIPO seem interested in changing the status quo. Reports are coming in that PIPO are hoping to increase their presence in the Chinese tablet market by launching the H3 tablet. The big selling point for the H3 is that it will be the first tablet to offer 4G LTE support with a MediaTek processor. The H3 will come equipped with a MediatTek MT6592 which was one of the first ‘true’ Octa-core processors. In contrast to ‘fake’ Octa-core processors, the true ones allow all eight cores to work simultaneously instead of the fake Octa-core processors which rely on four cores working at a time, switching between high and low power modes.

Other details of the H3 tablet are extremely sketchy at the moment although it does seem the tablet will be 10.1” sized with a screen resolution of 1900 x 1200. In addition, the device will come with a 13 MP camera which is pretty good for a tablet. An early image (shown above) of the H3 does shows its design is rather similar to the PIPO T9 (previous PIPO 8.9” tablet) except the corners on the H3 are less round and sharper. There are reports that the H3 will also offer dual-SIM capability and additional memory card slots. Although at the moment very little has been confirmed.

Android Headliner: Why Can’t We Sync Android Wear Between Multiple Devices?

Android-Wear-Reset-AH-1

So we’ve had Android Wear smartwatches in our hands for a few months now. Essentially ever since Google I/O in June. We’ve had the Gear Live and the G Watch for a few months, with the Moto 360 just coming out this month, and a few others announced as well. And now that we’ve gotten into the busy season and are getting tons of review units in to review on the site, I have a gripe about Android Wear that probably won’t affect everyone, but it’s still important.

Most of you that flash custom ROMs, or have done any kind of factory reset since you’ve gotten an Android Wear smartwatch probably know all about this. But whenever you switch devices or do a factory reset or flash a custom ROM, you then have to factory reset your watch. As you cannot simply pair it with another device. Now I understand that most of you out there don’t have multiple phones, but some of you do. And it’s a pain to have to reset my watch every couple of weeks. If Google could just simply add in a option to sync with another phone, it’d make a lot of people happy. Especially those of us that are reviewers here.

Yes, I know. Android Wear is still in it’s early days. There are a few other things that annoy me about Android Wear as well, but I’ll save that for a later date. Just allow me to sync the Moto 360 with the Moto X, then with the LG G3 without having to factory reset it, and i’ll be more than happy. And I’m sure I’m not alone here. You’d think that’d be one of the first things Google would add in an OTA. We’ve only had about 4-5 OTA’s since Google I/O anyways. Hopefully this will come in the post-Android L update for Android Wear. As we do know there’s a lot of features coming in that update, including better support for custom watch faces. Which I personally can’t wait for.

Android Wear still has some bumps to get over, and I guess that’s what we get for being early adopters here. But it is coming along, and not to sound like a fanboy or anything here, but I think Android Wear has some of the best smartwatches so far. For one, it syncs with a whole lot more devices than the Apple Watch and Samsung’s Tizen-powered watches. There’s also Pebble, but that’s mostly just notifications on a black and white display. As well as Sony’s own ecosystem for their smartwatches, which is great and all but there’s plenty more development on Android Wear now. What parts of Android Wear really annoy you right now? Be sure to let us know in the comments below.

Google Removes Mandatory G+ Sign-up for new Gmail Accounts

google-plus-graveyard-600 If you’ve made a Gmail account, you know the struggle of having to sign up for Google Plus against your will in order to use any of the neat features that come with a Google account. Thankfully, that annoying restriction is on the way out. Now you can create a new Google account in order to further compartmentalize your online presence without making ANOTHER Google Plus account. Unfortunately, if you want to use YouTube or leave reviews on Google Play, or set up your Android phone, you will still need to set up an account on Google’s fading social media site.

While this will add some convenience to setting up a spam-catching email account, it does signal the end of a very short era. With Google no longer pushing Google Plus as hard as it used to the site can start to shrink even more. There are already hints that Google is done with G+, and this news hardly quells the rumors.
