Acer ChromeBook 13 with NVIDIA Tegra K1 officially announced

NVIDIA and Acer have officially revealed the Acer ChromeBook 13, the first ChromeBook to come equipped with a Tegra K1 chipset. It might seem like overkill to have a graphics powerhouse inside a ChromeBook, but NVIDIA and Acer are betting on the future of graphically rich web experiences powered by standards like WebGL (which even the biggest companies such as Google use for web applications like Google Maps).

We all know about the prowess of the Tegra K1 — it has 192 GPU cores and boasts a lot of the same graphics features that you’ll see in their full-sized desktop Kepler chips. Let’s talk about how it works inside the ChromeBook 13.

For starters, the number “13″ in the device’s name doesn’t only refer to its display size, but its battery life. NVIDIA says users can squeeze 13 hours of use out of this thing, whereas an average PC notebook is around 6 hours, with average Chromebooks coming in at around 8. This is thanks to NVIDIA’s Tegra K1 and its ability to sip on power instead of sucking a battery dry. Pretty insane if you ask me.

The device is about as thin as thin can get, too — 18mm, which makes it the second thinnest Chromebook on the market. Here’s a look at some of the other specs that make up the rest of this device:

• 16GB of internal storage (expandable up to 32GB)


• 2GB of RAM (expandable up to 4GB)


• 1366 x 768 or 1920 x 1080 resolution


• 2x USB 3.0, one on side one on back


• HDMI out


• SD card slot


• WiFi-only (no 3G or 4G option)

And to top all that off, this thing is pretty affordable. The 1366 x 768 option is coming in at a starting price of $279, while the full HD version costs just $20 more. Both should be available for pre-sale on Amazon and Best Buy later today, and we’ll be updating this post with links to those product pages once they go live. Android How To: Add/Remove Micro SD Card on the LG G3

Looking to add a Micro SD Card to your LG G3? Or maybe you want to take it out. Well it’s not that hard actually, but we’re still going to show you how it’s done. You’ll need to pop off the back cover of your LG G3. Behind the back cover you’ll find the SIM card and SD card slots stacked on top of each other on the right side of the camera and volume/power buttons. If you have the LG G3 Cat. 6 version, the SD card will be on the left side, and not on top of the SIM card slot. Now you will need to pop out the battery to slide the SD card out of the slot. Or to put it back in. This also works for removing or changing the SIM card on the LG G3 – and for those that don’t know, the LG G3 uses a micro SIM card.

Just like that you can add an extra 128GB of storage to your LG G3, making it a 160GB phone, unless you have the 16GB version then that’d be a 144GB smartphone. Possible first images of Galaxy Note 4 leak show metallic frame

Grab your saltshakers – purported images of the Galaxy Note 4 just leaked, showing what appears to be a metal frame similar to that of the Galaxy Alpha.

The images were sent to GSM Arena by an anonymous source, so there’s really no guarantee that they are the real deal. This disclaimer out of the way, the images don’t show any sign of tampering and seem credible enough.

So, what are we looking at here? The most obvious feature is the metallic-looking frame going around the sides of the phones, which is very similar to the frame of the Galaxy Alpha. The frame is chamfered on the edges, and features what appear to be plastic inserts, ostensibly to ensure antenna reception. The bottom edge of the phone shows a microUSB 3.0 port, a speaker grille, and the S Pen slot.

The back of the phone is likely textured plastic, similar to the Note 3’s, but without the faux stitching. The squared off camera and LED/heart rate sensor module are also similar to those we saw in leaked Galaxy Alpha shots.

On the front side, the only distinctive feature are the very thin bezels. Rumor has it the Note 4 will feature a 5.7-inch 2560 x 1440 pixel AMOLED display.

In a related report, Phone Arena published the alleged retail box of the Note 4 showing a render of the front of the device that’s quite similar to the images above.

Android How To: Launch the Camera on the LG G3 Without turning on the Display

LG has put the volume rocked and power button on the back of the LG G3, just like with the LG G2, but it’s actually a bit easier to use now. But the volume rocker can do a bit more than just change the volume on your phone. Long pressing the volume down button will wake up your LG G3, and open up the camera. Making it pretty easy to get right into the camera when you want to take a picture quickly. The volume up button brings you into the QuickMemo+ app – which is also another way to take a screenshot on the LG G3.

While these shortcuts are great, it would be even better if we could customize these to do what we want. But instead we’re stuck with either turning these shortcuts on or off. And that’s a bit surprising given how customizable everything else is in LG’s skin, even down to the icons in the launcher. I’d love to be able to change the volume up button to something else, as I really don’t use the QuickMemo+ feature on the LG G3. Hopefully LG is reading this and will make that change in an upcoming OTA for the LG G3.

That said, it’s still great to be able to quickly jump into the camera by long-pressing the volume down button. Especially when you wan to capture something quickly. More Rumors Pointing Toward Samsung Galaxy Alpha’s Launch This Wednesday

I bet you’re more than tired of the Galaxy Alpha rumors by now. We’ve seen a bunch of leaked images of the phone as well as alleged specifications, this is just one of the leaks, you can find more images from previous leaks in the gallery below. Samsung Developer Console also confirmed the device will sport a 720p screen. Previous leaks said that the device is due this Wednesday, August 13th, it looks like that will pan out.

A fresh information from Korean MT Media says that the device will be launched this Wednesday. Samsung might finally release this thing and rid us of tons and tons of rumors that have been coming our way in the recent weeks and even conflict one with the other. Either way, Samsung’s premium Galaxy Alpha offering is expected to sport Samsung’s very own Exynos octa-core processor along with 2GB of RAM and an already mentioned 720p (1280 x 720) display. Other than that, 32GB of expandable (via Micro SD card) storage has been rumored along with an 1850mAh battery. Android 4.4 KitKat is expected out of the box. If the leaked images are to be believed the device itself looks an awful lot like a Galaxy S2 when you’re looking at it from the front and it has that chambered edges like the latest iPhone devices (4, 4s, 5, 5s). Hopefully we won’t be seeing yet another lawsuit between Samsung and Apple.

This device should come prior to the Galaxy Note 4 phablet which is expected to launch at this year’s IFA in Berlin at Samsung’s already scheduled “Unpacked” event on September 3rd. Anyone out there interested in the Galaxy Alpha smartphone or are you holding out for the Galaxy Note 4 (of course there’s a third “I’m not interested in either one” option)?

The A11 could be one of HTC’s first 64-bit smartphones

Now that Evan Blass announced his retirement, there’s a competition going on to replace @evleaks as the Internet’s go-to source of mobile-related leaks. Among the contenders is Twitter user @upleaks , a Beijing-based leaker endorsed by Blass himself.

@upleaks’ latest scoop is alleged info on a mid-range HTC device codenamed A11 that will feature a 64-bit Snapdragon 410 processor. The device will reportedly be available in the US through Sprint, though probably not as an exclusive, and will be part of the mid-range Desire family, along the likes of Desire 610 and Desire 816.

The A11 will feature a 4.7-inch 854 x 480 display, a Snapdragon 410 MSM8916 processor, a 5MP rear camera, and Android 4.4.2 with Sense 6.

While the two images that supposedly show the A11 reveal a resemblance with the HTC One (M8), the mid-ranger won’t feature the M8’s iconic BoomSound speakers, according to @upleaks.

The Snapdragon 410 will probably be Qualcomm’s first 64-bit to hit the market, ahead of the higher end Snapdragon 808 and 810, which are only expected in early 2015. Comprising four Cortex A53 cores spinning at up to 1.4GHz, an Adreno 306 GPU, and a LTE Category 4-capable model, the Snapdragon 410 will be the processor of choice for mid-range devices coming over the twelve months. Qualcomm did not offer an estimated release date for the first devices running on the 410; the chip was announced in December 2013 and samples of it are currently distributed to OEMs.

More Xperia Z3 Compact images leak

Sony is planning to release a new generation of its excellent Z Compact series at IFA, and now new images give us a good idea of what to expect.

Like its predecessor, the Z1 Compact (there’s no Z2 Compact), the new Xperia Z3 Compact will feature top specifications in a relatively small package, while keeping design and features similar to the top of the line Xperia Z3.

We’ve had a brief peek at the Z3 Compact before, but this set of leaked shots (via Xperia Blog ) gives away a lot more about the device. The images showing the device from the side suggest the Z3 Compact will be slightly thinner than the previous generation, which was almost one centimeter thick.

We see the same rounded edges the Xperia Z3 is expected to feature, but there’s only one protective flap on the sides, hiding both the microSD and the micro USB port.

The opposite side houses Sony’s iconic silver power button, the volume rocker, and the dedicated camera shutter.

On the back (image at the top), we get a glimpse of the Xperia Z3’s 20.7MP camera and a rather large centrally positioned LED flash.

As a refresher, the Xperia Z3 Compact will feature a 4.5 or 4.6 inches display, probably of 720p resolution, a Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 20.7MP Exmor RS camera, and Android 4.4. Like all the flagship Xperias, the Z3 Compact will be water and dust resistant.

Sony has a press event for September 3 at the IFA Berlin show, where we expect to see the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact, alongside new models of Sony’s QX detachable lenses.
