SportsManias: Sports News Feed – Indie app of the day

sportsmanias

What is SportsManias?

SportsManias is a newer sports application that aims to bring you up-to-the-minute news on your favorite sports and favorite sports teams. It does this by letting you select your favorite teams when you first open the application and after you create an account using your favorite social media site. From there you’ll get a news feed, a video feed, a tweet feed, and a rumors feed.

The app is laid out in a manner that is mostly in accordance to the Android design guidelines. Each tab is swipe-able and the settings menu is a slide-out hamburger menu from the left side. That means people shouldn’t have any trouble navigating the application. It’s also fairly smooth and we didn’t have any issues getting to where we needed to go.

Other than the main features, there isn’t much to the app. You can get notifications on game or match starts as well as updates for each period/quarter/inning/etc if you prefer. Otherwise, it’s essentially a giant news dump but you get to control which news gets dumped to you.

We did experience a few problems with the application. The account sign-in using social media was a bit buggy. SportsManias crashed twice trying to sign into Google+ before it finally worked. Also, the built-in browser doesn’t allow the re-sizing of pages or text to fit the screen which was incredibly obnoxious. We hope that gets fixed in later updates.

Sports news but faster.

PROS

  • Lets you browse videos, tweets, articles, and rumors about your favorite teams.

  • Android design standard is used and in this use case is a really good idea.

  • Lets you create an account using Twitter, Google+, or Facebook.

  • If you switch to individual team views, you can also see standings and schedule.

  • Works pretty well and operates fairly smooth.

CONS

  • We had some sign in issues using social media and that'll probably frustrate people.

  • The in-app browser doesn't resize web pages to fit the screen size. That's a big no-no.

  • Is missing some things that make competitors a more well-rounded experience. Not necessarily bad but it's not good either.

7.0

All in all, this is a sports application with a lot of potential. It’s aiming to be a Bleacher Report competitor and for right now Bleacher Report simply has the more stable application. However, we’d check back in a few months once SportsManias has fixed the few issues they have because it could become a contender very quickly.

[New App] Swipify Gives Your Android Wear Device A Gesture-Based Recent Apps Menu And A Few Other Tricks

unnamed (20) Think of smartwatches now like smartphones were around 2008 - despite the fact that the idea has been around for a long time, everyone is still trying to figure out the best way to go about it. In Android Wear, Google is trying to make a super-simple interface based on short swipes, taps, and voice commands... which leaves a lot of users craving more conventional tools. So we've got a launcher, a web browser, a file explorer (ugh) and now a substitute for the Recent Apps menu in Android OS.

Team Win Recovery Project adds support for Samsung Gear Live and LG G Watch

TWRP

Team Win posted its official custom recovery for both the Samsung Gear Live and the LG G Watch today, giving users the ability to add customer ROMs to the devices.

Once you’re in custom recovery, the options on the screen are a bit small for a smartwatch screen, so an upcoming interface update will most likely resize the buttons. Otherwise, everything works fine. Of course you’ll need an unlocked bootloader before you do anything.

Some solid custom ROMs should be on the way soon, so just be patient…

Nexus Lives: Motorola rumored to be working on a 5.9-inch Nexus phone codenamed ‘Shamu’

Shamu

It was only a few months ago when we thought the Nexus program was dead.

But then came rumors of Volantis, HTC’s codenamed 9-inch Nexus tablet to be released alongside Android L this fall.

Since we hadn’t heard much regarding a new Nexus phone to come out this fall, we were perplexed, but assumed that a new phone would not be coming. Until now.

New rumors suggest that Motorola is currently working on a large (5.9-inch display) phone codenamed “Shamu,” to be part of the Nexus program and be released this fall alongside HTC’s Volantis and Android L.

Although it’s not the wackiest thing to ever happen, it’s interesting that Motorola is working with Google so soon after it had been sold off to Lenovo. Of course, it would also make sense that this project had been in the works for quite some time now.

The phone is rumored to have a fingerprint scanner. Screen resolution is unknown. Target release date is set for November, but we’ll see where that actually ends up — things tend to change quickly regarding these types of things.

In the picture above, you’ll see the mysterious Shamu device appear in Google’s issue tracker.

The information about the issue tracker comes from Spirent Communications, a company that tests devices for errors. It would make sense that they would have their hands on the device.

Take all this information with a grain of salt, as this is all the information we currently have, but since the release date is set so close to the rumored Volantis’ projected release, as well as Android L, this isn’t too much of a stretch. Also, the phone is running a Google-built kernel. (That pretty much screams Nexus right there.)

It’s also important to note that Google has referenced sea creatures in its Nexus phone code names in the past — tilapia and maguro have been past code names, for example. Shamu, of course would continue this pattern. (Shamu, being a whale, would make sense to be the code name for an oversized Nexus phone, as well.)

In honor of the new (rumored) Nexus phone, I leave you with a pretty awesome video of the Shamu Rocks show at Sea World San Diego.
