Visa Will Soon Provide A Much Simpler and Safer Checkout

For years Paypal has had the internet covered when it came to secure checkouts. Now theres a new sheriff in town and they plan on going head to head with Paypal and a few others. The company that plans on competing with Paypal, Amazon, and Google is Visa. The card company is upgrading their current digital payment program to a much simpler and secure method that can also be done on your mobile device. This move made by Visa could possibly be a threat to online checkouts such as Paypal due to the simplicity that both checkouts have. So how will Visa’s checkout work? Well much like its new competition, instead of inputting your credit card information while buying an item online, all you have to do is enter a username and password and you’re all set. The process is similar to the checkout on any site that gives you the option to sign in with Paypal to make a purchase. The checkout is fast, easier, and safe.

According to the card company, they are not alone as they emerge in new territory that is being held down by the strongholds of Paypal. In a post made on their blog, the card issuer said, “We’re launching with some of the web’s biggest merchants ranging from Pizza Hut and Neiman Marcus to Staples and United Airlines, with more than 100 other merchants you know and love like 1-800-FLOWERS®, Jos. A. Bank, Live Nation, lululemon athletica, MovieTickets.com, Newegg, Rakuten.com, Teleflora, Ticketmaster, TigerDirect and Wine Enthusiast. More than 180 of our banking partners throughout North American and Australia, including Bank of America, BB&T, Chase, Citi, Navy Federal Credit Union, PNC, US Bank and Wells Fargo, are all also participating in Visa Checkout.”

As you can see, Visa is ready to take on the challenges that will be posed against them as they journey into new waters. In addition to their partners, Visa will soon launch a checkout SDK for shopping apps to add the Visa Checkout experience to mobile device. Chrome for Android update rolling out, brings back Doodles on new tabs and more

It’s Wednesday and that means we can expect at least a few minor updates for some of Google’s apps today. First up to bat is the Chrome browser, which is seeing an update to version 36.0.1985.122.

So what’s new here? While not a major update, there are tons of bug fixes and performance improvements, improved text rendering on non-mobile optimized sites and the return of Doodles to the new tab page. Additionally, the latest update is said to include security fixes for the following issues:

As is typical, the update is rolling out in stages so don’t be surprised if it takes a few days to reach you. LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live now available on Google Shopping Express

Google Shopping Express may not be available everywhere quite yet (okay, that’s a huge understatement), but in the areas where it is live, it’s easy to see how same-day delivery on items you might otherwise be too busy to pick up (or too lazy) could be incredibly beneficial to some. Where you’ll find the usual assortment of goods on Shopping Express — paper towels, food, cleaning supplies — there are also a fairly good range of electronic devices that can be purchased from retailers like Best Buy or Google Play.

Guess it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to find Google has just made available their new line of Android Wear smartwatches available for same day delivery via Shopping Express. As discovered by one Reddit member, both the LG G Watch (black and white) and the Samsung Gear Live are now available from Google Shopping Express with same day delivery, although seemingly limited to only the Peninsula area of San Francisco.

As Google Shopping Express expands, the prospect of near instant gratification of the latest Google Play devices is definitely an appealing one. For those interested, you can find links to the aforementioned Android Wear products below.

Nokia Opens Up HERE SDK For Android Developers Along With Their LiveSight API

Ever since the release of the Nokia X, Nokia has been taking a more keen interest in the world of Android. We’ve heard that there Nokia HERE maps application would be coming to Android at some point and while there is still no date set for when we might be able to use that as our primary map source, Nokia has just announced that they’re opening up the SDK for HERE maps, which Android developers will now be able to take advantage of so they can work some of the LiveSight features into their own applications. LiveSight for those who are unaware is Nokia’s augmented reality software that they use for HERE maps, which allows for detailed information about certain places to come up on screen when you have the camera pointed at them.

While LiveSight features may be new to Android thanks to the now open HERE maps SDK from Nokia, the idea behind and the basics of how LiveSight works is not new to the platform. There have been many augmented reality apps to hit the Play Store before, like Layar for example. Layar was an app that was made available on the Android Market,(yes I said Android Market, because that’s how old this app is)around the release of the original Mytouch from HTC on T-mobile’s network. The app basically opened up your camera and would feed you detailed information about the places around you almost like a live map.

Nokia states that with the release of the new LiveSight API being released(which is fully integrated into the HERE SDK), app developers will be able to make their own apps using LiveSight and grab the point of interest information from HERE or any other geo-located data source. Nokia uses a “beer-finder” app as an example to envision what developers may come up with, and while that is a fantastic idea and we hope some developer takes on that task, think about an application that lets you find the nearest cafes and coffee shops. Using the LiveSight API, a developer could make it so that any individual looking to get their daily caffeine fix could use it to track down the nearest place to grab a cup all with a visual search just by pointing their phones camera in any given direction.

Chrome For Android Bumped To v36 With Improved Text Rendering On Non-Mobile Sites, Desktop Chrome Updated As Well

The Chrome developers have released a new version of their browser that may not have a particularly exciting changelog, but it does lead to a better browsing experience. Version 36 should make text on those websites that don't have a mobile alternative render somewhat better. This, combined with non-specified performance improvements and bug fixes should result in more enjoyable browser use.

Bungie Unleashes Destiny Companion App A Day Before The Beta

Bungie’s new massively multiplayer online FPS/RPG title Destiny goes into its much anticipated Beta tomorrow on July 17th, and surprisingly the company has updated their Bungie app for android, now transforming it into the Destiny companion app that can be used for tomorrow’s beta and beyond. Bungie had done this once before with the first look alpha of Destiny that they opened up to PS4 players earlier last month, which they announced at E3. Now that the beta is upon us, guardians will want to be sure to stay up to date on all the latest details about the game using the companion app. If you’re playing in the beta starting tomorrow, be sure to download the Destiny companion app to enhance your experience while playing.

Much like many games that have released so far this year for consoles and PC, Destiny joins the long line of companion apps that will provide extra details and second screen information to players, or in this case, guardians, along with other cool features like being able to see your character, your characters build setup of items, weapons, and gear etc. which can all be found in the Grimoire section of the app. You’ll also be able to view the map of planets, as well as stay on top of your quests and other missions and track your bounties. You can analyze your player stats and compare your grimoire with other guardians to see how you stack up too, just in case you have a competitive side.

There are of course handy links to pre-order the game as of right now since it has yet to release, that will obviously change once the game is out and the app is updated. For those that played in the Alpha, it doesn’t look like you’re able to use the app to view your previous character from that play session. Upon entering Grimoire I was greeted with a message that my account had never played Destiny. That being said, it appears that the beta is starting gamers off with a clean slate in the guardian department, but once the beta begins tomorrow you’ll be able to create a character and then view it in the Destiny app at any time during the beta play session. The app of course is free, so if you’ll be playing tomorrow through the weekend, download it and prepare yourselves. See you starside Guardians.

LTE-A Galaxy S 5′s 2k screen gets reviewed, shows improvement over current models

Last year, we saw Samsung release a slightly tuned-up version of the Galaxy S 4, complete with LTE-A support. The same thing happened this year, with the GS5 Broadband LTE-A getting released in South Korea with a Snapdragon 805, 3 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of internal storage, all slightly better than what comes with the standard Galaxy S 5. The most important difference, however, is the 2k screen that comes with the LTE-A version of the device.

The GS5 LTE-A marks the first official 2k smartphone from Samsung, and while the screen on the original Galaxy S 5 is very impressive, it looks like Samsung’s 2k panel is showing some visible improvements. Benchmarks in color accuracy and saturation all score the 2k screen noticeably better than the 1080p screen. The higher resolution screen loses a bit of maximum brightness compared to the 1080p display, but that’s a small trade-off for the marked improvements in so many other areas.

AnandTech goes into detailed scrutiny of the device’s screen, as well as how it compares to other Android devices and Apple’s iPhone, and the GS5 with LTE-A typically comes out close to the top.
