Alleged Motorola Device Shown Running Android L, Looks Larger than the Nexus 5

AH Motorola Logo 1.3

It’s been a little while now since we heard anything on the Moto X+1 front, and while it’s pretty obvious that Motorola is looking to prepare a follow-up device they’re not done with the Moto X just yet. With sales popping up here and there, it’s obvious Motorola believe there’s still life in their Moto X just yet, but many people will be wondering when a follow-up is to hit the market, especially as some breezed past the modest specs in the original. We’ve seen what could be the Moto X+1 before now and we’ve seen the name and logo appear on Motorola’s website, but here comes a very different type of device, as TK Tech News has a video of what could be another Moto device.

The device in question is seen on video taped up, running Android L side-by-side by the Nexus 5 and according to their tipster, this device has different specs to the rumored Moto X+1, and the size leads TK Tech News to think that this is a different Motorola device altogether. While we can’t say much about a device that’s taped up running Android L, especially as there are some excellent Android L themes out there right now, but it is feasible that Motorola is testing out Android L and in fact they probably have been long before Google I/O.

So, what is it? Well, it’s possible that it’s another Moto device, perhaps a larger version of the X+1, but we’re thinking that this is perhaps some sort of Droid device heading for Verizon later in the year. Motorola have said before that they want to keep the size of their devices the best they can for their users, but the Droid line likes to offer something a little more in line with the likes of Samsung and HTC. Whatever the device is, there’s a couple of videos below for you to ogle over and let us know what you think in the comments!

HTC One M8 Sales on The Decline Due to Competition in The Market

HTC-One-M8-24

HTC is a company that builds quality devices, and is known for their designs. However, the company has had a difficult time pulling themselves out of the financial hole they’ve been in for the last 2 years. Their latest device may have been an attempt to start that climb, but according to analysts from a financial firm-Canaccord Genuity- sales are on the decline.

HTC has made many attempts to turn the company around and their latest flagship-the HTC One M8-may not have been able to save the company. The M8 wasn’t expected to turn the company completely around, but at least get them pointed in the right direction. The biggest issue for HTC continues to be advertising and their budget allocated to that very important element of any business. Getting movie stars like Gary Oldman for the M8, and Robert Downey Jr. for last years M7, may seem like advertising gold. However, HTC’s biggest competitors simply have more money to spend on advertising. Where we see a few commercials with Gary Oldman sporting the M8, Samsung is busy renting out billboards, and sponsoring events.

The market for mobile devices is one of the most fierce markets around. Technology is constantly moving, growing, and companies have to keep up with each other in every aspect. That competition is one of the biggest reasons HTC’s M8 sales may be slowing down. Michael Walkley, an analyst from Canaccord Genuity says the reason behind the slowdown in M8 sales is “intense high-tier Android smartphone competition.” Companies that use Google’s Android operating system have enough competition between themselves, but they aren’t the only competition in the market.

So far we’ve seen flagship devices from most of the major companies for 2014. Though there’s still the second half of the year and we expect to see Apple come strong with the iPhone 6. So while HTC has to be concerned with other Android device manufacturers, they also have to be concerned with Apple. This is what makes competition in the market so strong-the diversity. While advertising is one of HTC’s weak points, their devices are far from weak.

The HTC One M7, and now M8 are praised for their design and build quality. Some of the more attractive devices come from HTC, which if sold correctly could make that turn around more smooth. HTC is still expected to release a smartwatch later this year, and possibly bring some of their lower end devices into the US. These efforts combined with a stronger ad campaign could turn HTC back into a highly profitable company.

FTC Suing Amazon For Not Falling In Line On Settling Unauthorized Purchases Made By Children On The Appstore

nexusae0_AmazonAppstore-Thumb1

While Apple was eventually forced into settling for $32.5 million in customer reimbursements during a similar investigation launched by the FTC last year, it seems Amazon isn't interested in paying out for unauthorized purchases on its own Appstore, and the FTC isn't taking it lying down.

Today, the de facto consumer protection agency in the US filed a federal lawsuit against Amazon under the wide-reaching FTC Act's section 45, which prohibits "unfair or deceptive acts or practices in or affecting commerce." Yes, that is a law.

[APK Download] Google Keyboard 3.1.19633 Update Lays Groundwork For Spoken Emoji, Moves Voice Input Button, Adds 5 Languages

unnamed (1)

A new version of the official Google Keyboard is rolling out at the moment, but you can pick up the APK right here if you can't wait. Today's Google Keyboard update adds a few things, but it's not a huge update.

What's New

First and foremost are new input languages. Indian English, Basque, Galician, Swiss Italian, and Latin American Spanish are all now supported. Next, the voice input shortcut has been moved for apps that don't use the inline search box voice input button (it shows up for some that do, too, oddly).

OnePlus teases wood backs for July 22nd

wood-oneplus

Despite being a relatively new company with only one phone to its name, OnePlus’ history has already been a very interesting one, filled with ups and downs. Questionable marketing strategies and a frustrating invite system has quickly taken away some of the OnePlus One’s limelight, but there’s still no denying that the One is an extremely impressive looking handset at a killer price — if you’re lucky enough to be able to buy one.

While we don’t know when this situation will change, that’s not stopping OnePlus from teasing us about something. The teaser (seen above) lists the date 7.22 (July 22nd) and says “Knock on wood” on a background made to look like wood. The obvious hint here is that wood backs, and hopefully the other promised StyleSwap covers, are on their way. But could there be more to it than that?

It would be amazing if OnePlus tied its full global launch to the same date as its SwapStyle cover debut, but considering the early troubles that the company has had with fulfilling invites in a timely manner, we’re not sure if they are ready just yet. It’s probably more likely that they will simply expand the amount of invites they are giving out to coincide with the launch of wood backs, which is something they’ve already started doing.

What do you think, still excited to get your hands on a OnePlus? Willing to go through the hoops to get it, or are you waiting for the full launch before you decide whether or not to pick one up?

FreedomPop’s free phone service coming to Europe and parts of Asia

freedompop

FreedomPop has been in the free mobile data business for years now, and more recently in 2013 the provider started offering free phone service utilizing Sprint’s network. As you might have guessed, the business model here is that you get so much service free (200 minutes, 500 texts, 500MB data) but you can also unlock unlimited everything for an extra charge of $20.

Right now FreedomPop’s services are limited to select Sprint markets, though the company’s ambitions don’t end there. In the past there have been whispers about the company’s plans to expand their partnership to other carriers such as AT&T in the United States. And now it turns out they also have their eyes on Europe.

Today the company has confirmed its services will be rolling out to Europe, starting immediately with a limited test in Belgium. The service should also launch in the not-too-distant future in the UK, Germany, France and Spain, with eventual plans to come to parts of Asia as well. There’s no word just on which carriers the MVNO service will utilize, nor how their free and premium plans might differ from what they offer stateside. Considering Europe tends to have lower costs for phone plans, we imagine the premium rates will likely cost lower than in the U.S., but that’s really just speculation on our part.

Either way, this is exciting news for those looking for cheap or free basic smartphone access. Of course, the service isn’t without its negatives, such as the fact that it uses mobile data for everything — including VOIP calls. This means the service might perform less admirably in markets where 3G is the only option.

Promo Video For The Verizon HTC One Remix (One Mini 2) Briefly Appears On Verizon's YouTube Channel

onemin2 The art of needlessly re-naming manufacturer's phones for American carriers seems to have gone out of vogue in the last year or two - no more Droid Xyboards, no more Sprint Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch. But in the case of the HTC One Mini 2, I think the original name was bad enough that we can forgive Verizon for wanting a rebrand. The HTC One Remix, which is almost certainly Verizon's rebranded version of the One Mini 2, was featured in a Verizon promotional video this morning.
